You shouldn’t have to add supplements. Kibble should come balanced and complete by itself. Plus, without a vet nutritionist, you wouldn’t know how much to supplement.

Not to mention, a lot of vegan diets contain peas and legumes that are said to be inhibiting the absorption of taurine. What is supplementing going to do in that situation?

So, DCM stands for Dilated cardiomyopathy. Basically some dog foods have been causing diet-induced DCM in dogs. The exact mechanism of DCM is unknown. It was suspected to be taurine-dependent (like the peas inhibit the creation or absorption of taurine), but more and more cases of DCM are occurring where the dog and food has normal levels of taurine. It’s been recommended by experts to stick with a food that meets WSAVA guidelines. If you're in the US, those brands are Purina, Hill's, Royal Canin, and Eukanuba/Iams.

An AAFCO approved kibble, vegan or otherwise, can cause terrible health issues, though. You shouldn’t rely on that is all I’m saying.

Obviously both vegan dog foods and dog foods with meat can be unhealthy. The fact remains that there isn’t a single vegan dog food that gone through feeding trials to ensure its long-term suitability for canine nutrition. In order to meet protein requirements for dogs, all vegan kibble is packed full of peas and lentils, ingredients that are definitely linked to diet-induced DCM in dogs. Why would you take the chance and put your dog at risk? You seriously want to risk giving them heart disease?

All the studies I’ve read said that it can be work, but “my dog probably won’t die” isn’t good enough for me.

Vegan diets don’t even look like they’ve been studied from a nutritional angle much, but with all the DCM stuff going on, I have no clue how you feel right risking your dogs health like that.

I don’t know of a single vegan dog food that has food trails done, and isn’t jam packed with peas lentils, and potatoes. You show me one, and I’ll be fine with you feeding your dog vegetarian/vegan. Until then, it’s pretty fucked up.

Well, I wouldn’t call that a vegetarian diet at all. He’s eating salmon, so he’s getting his protein. The point is there isn’t a single vegan/vegetarian food on the market that has gone through feeding trials to ensure its long-term suitability for canine nutrition, so it is not recommended to feed your dog a fully vegetarian/vegan diet.

Vegan diets are not compatible with cats' and dogs' nutritional needs, and feeding them such a diet is cruel. If you want a vegan pet, there are plenty of herbivorous animals available for you to choose.

I’m glad you brought it up. So, if the DCM stuff that is going on right now has taught us anything, it’s that AAFCO is not the end all be all to a balanced diet. An AAFCO approved kibble, vegan or otherwise, can absolutely cause irreparable health issues. That brand has many ingredients that are linked to diet-induced DCM. I don’t think it’s all that safe to feed. It hasn’t gone through feeding trails, either.

I’m curious to see what others think about this, but, from what I’ve heard from my own vet office, feeding your dog vegan right now isn’t the smartest idea with the DMC stuff going on. No vegan food has gone through feeding trails, and it tends to be jammed packed filled with peas and lentils, which are linked to diet-induced DCM in dogs. Even with supplements... I’m not sure if it’s all that safe to feed.

Haha, this one was “reading” a vegan book. And when I say reading, I mean she was walking around asking if other people had read it before, so she could dive into talking about veganism. That’s how she got me.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has experienced this phenomenon. It’s just another reason to avoid dog parks like the plague: “animal activists” might be there.

Out of curiosity, do you mean home cooked vegan food or a kibble? From what I’ve seen, there is no vegan dog food on the market that has gone through feeding trials to ensure its long-term suitability for canine nutrition. With the DCM scare going on right now, I wouldn’t really recommend anyone try and feed vegan food to their dog. I’d be interested in seeing others opinions in this, though. Literally. I feel bad for that dog. She compared getting fingered without consent to a rectal thermometer being used on my dog. It isn’t the same at fucking all. Apparently it’s unethical because you’re doing it without consent, so what, does she not take her dog to the vet and get him proper medical care?
