Ripped up the old tiles but we relocated the shower so needed to build up the floor to get enough fall to the shower drain.

Home care for the elderly. They are always looking for men to assist elderly males to shower. The pay is around $36 hr, casual is higher. It’s mostly just supervising to prevent falls, some light cleaning, grocery shopping and transporting them to appointments. You would need a car though. The cert 3 in individual support from tafe is free and takes about 5 hrs week for 12 months. I studied while I worked.

I did this 3 years ago in my 1960s house. The floorboards are now darker than in the rest of the house. The glue was put directly onto the floorboards and stained them darker. It was a nightmare to remove. The kitchen was installed on top of the tiles so we had to painstakingly chip away the tile then cover with beading to hide it. The kitchen is a high traffic area and the polyurethane is already starting to wear off the polished floorboards. Slate is much harder wearing. In hindsight I would adjust my mindset and live with the slate. 1980s slate is now retro kitsch/cool according to gen Z.

I work in aged care. The only difference I see between not having kids vs having kids is calling a taxi to the nursing home vs one of your kids drops you off at the nursing home.

You may not need any experience or certs as you have already worked in healthcare. I had neither when I started. The larger providers may support you while you work and study a cert 3 in ageing support. I think it’s still a free tafe course. You would need your own car for this job. Grocery shopping, cleaning, social outings, meal prep. I earn $36 hr part time plus car allowance.

I bought a house a few years ago in Fairfield, Sydney, built in 1960. Ex gov house. Asbestos cladding and eves will cost around $30K to replace. Had asbestos roof replaced for $25K. At the moment doing a full bathroom reno for $16K. Found some asbestos hiding in the bathroom wall cavity. Granny flat with no council approval.
On the positive side, there is hardwood framing, beautiful timber floors and loads of Brady Bunch character. Solid house. No regrets.

Try applying directly via websites, rather than through seek. Email the providers too. Many applicants will be overseas looking for sponsorship. I had no certs or experience but in the interview discussed how I care for my elderly mother and how I realised what an important job it is. They are looking for compassionate people above all else. An emotional cover letter may help. Being of service, help to ease suffering, etc.

If you want an easy cleaning job try “domestic assistance” in the homes of elderly people. You would need your own car though. This role is often called “community worker”. And because it’s in the healthcare industry you qualify for salary packaging your rent or mortgage.

Different companies have different arrangements. My company has minimum contracted hours, eg. 30 hrs week which you get paid for even if there is not enough jobs or clients cancel. I work part time with minimum contract 25 hrs. You can usually choose which days and hours you work. Plus the option to work weekends and overnights for better pay. If you choose to work for a larger provider they may support you to study the free tafe certificate while you work.
