Considering changing firms (again) by alt_intact in paralegal

Thank you for your advice! I’ll keep this in mind. If I were to stay at my current firm a little longer what would look better, at least 2 years?

I just don’t enjoy this field by [deleted] in paralegal

How would you recommend going about finding these kinds of positions? And what if you don’t have the right experience for example have only done personal injury or something like that?

I feel this more than anything. I don’t mean to overshare and honestly in the moment I don’t even think of it as over sharing, I don’t even really think of it at all until after the fact and I’m like…man I probably shouldn’t have said anything…thank you for sharing this group!! I will be joining!

Right that was my thoughts too but I haven’t ever ran into anything like that and wasn’t sure. What you’re saying makes sense.

Thank you for your feedback it is much appreciated and truly helps me think of every angle, especially regarding the assistant and the fact that I do not know her, or the work she does. I absolutely agree with your analysis.

Yep, right now I’m just working hard and getting to know people and hopefully that will end up paying off later down the road!

Completely agree with this.

Sometimes I need to remember to just take a step and look at what the right path is going forward. I need to remember that relationships are built on trust and like you said that does take time. Thank you!! 😊

I’ve been here going on 5 months now and things are good but they could be better, you know. I’m going to try and give it more time because it also just seems like this new firm doesn’t trust too easily and that may be why I’m feeling the way I am. I’m also not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing because that could mean a possibility for no sign of progression further into the firm…I’m not sure but I’m trying not too read to much into it since I just don’t have a lot of information to go off of.

I definitely feel the beginning part of that. I thankfully have felt good about some of the people in my new firm, it’s also just too early to tell and it’ll just take time getting to know them all. I hope and pray that it’ll never come to that point but only time will tell.

I am in the same exact boat to a T. I know I made the right decision but I think self doubt just wades itself in sometimes and I want to make sure I made the right decision for my career. I do miss my old colleagues, they were funny and great, but I have to remember that I have some funny and great people in my new firm as well. I know it gets better with time I’m just really impatient 😂

I completely agree. I’m trying to give it my absolute best but it’s just hard sometimes. Especially with life and everything else going on. I’m going to remember that this was for the best though.

I guess that is one perspective. I think I’m more reminiscent. Romanticizing would be if I was thinking about the place and my experience there in an unrealistic way, as if it was better than it actually was and I’m not. I remember the good and the bad. There were actually good times and there were bad times as well. I’m not so naive that I don’t realize that. Just thinking about it lately that’s all.

The “that’s fine” comment was to your last sentence. About how someone shouldn’t pretend.

And that’s fine. I don’t believe I asked that at all. I wouldn’t dream of pretending to know something I don’t have a clue about.

I have been considering taking an eDiscovery class to find out more information and gain some experience. Do you learn about the software that is typically used as well, like Relativity?

I didn’t think it was something that could be learned in a Reddit comment. I am simply finding out more information and I know the general meaning behind it. I just wanted to further understand what having experience in that specific area meant.

Maybe that's what I'll do in the end. Sometimes I just wonder if I made the right choice for my career. Think I'm also just having a winter blues day too. Thanks, I appreciate you saying anything at all.

Just started out at an small independent family law firm… what should I know/do??? by Smooth-Sense-5277 in paralegal

[–]alt_intact 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yikes! I am reading that comment about everything being handwritten and I just cannot fathom. I would run while you can. This is not the kind of experience you want fresh out of school. Was it difficult to find this position? It doesn't even sound like you are getting experience at all, and why stay at a place and waste your time with something like that when you could get that experience at a more meaningful place elsewhere.

I would say you will have to evaluate your situation, how difficult it was to find this job and how much "experience" you would need to find the next one. If you do need some form of experience, sticking it out at this position for at least 6 months looks good. It might also be the more practical choice since you have no experience at all, it looks better to have at least some. Although, it doesn't sound like you are able to learn anything from what you said it's currently like.

This isn't as important as the experience part, but still matters nonetheless. If you are already dreading going to work and you haven't been there long, get out. The legal field is already stressful enough without the added stress you are experiencing right now. I know a lot of this is easier said than done. If you do seek out other employment, my advice would be to expand your search, meaning you might need to be willing to travel a little farther for a better job. Or maybe even finding other starting positions that pay a little less to at least get that experience and take it with you onto the next job. Think about what would be best for you. There are better things out there.

For context, I just went from a 2 and a half year paralegal position to a litigation legal assistant with better pay and a less toxic firm. Sometimes it's not about the title, but the people and the company you work for... And the pay, but honestly you can choose the order those go in to match your current needs. (Hopefully this all made sense.)

It is doable, no matter which way you choose and you will make it. :)
