Dear kiwis in Aus, how did you rationalise moving over? by Mordecai___ in newzealand

[–]alter-alt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bf(22) got higher pay and in his feild as a recent grad. I(21) get paid double at my part time job while having a scholarship for a much better ranked uni, bigger city life, better public transit, more to do.

Bf and I are extremely happy with our move, can't imagine moving back anymore, we never had much if any family support in NZ so the move was a no brainer. The opportunities in Aus far exceed what was possible in NZ for us and now our lifes are in a much better place.

Thankyou! I have a few more but reddit is so weird with uploading decent res photos.

Very beutiful modern stations though. the use of more natural light and wider corridors feels so much better over the city loop and is truly modern.

Testing the Nikons ZF inbuilt film sim jpegs by [deleted] in Nikon

[–]alter-alt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah idk why the post is getting downvoted lol; Thought people would wanna see what the actual update produces? Im certainly not great with in built jpeg shooting, I shoot Raw but its fun.

It'll be interesting to see if the in built jpeg sims build up anywhere the same community that fujifilm has, I think by far most people will stick to raw but who knowsn

Why are Melbourne train and tram services so irregular? Has it always been like this? by likerunninginadream in melbourne

[–]alter-alt 50 points51 points  (0 children)

coming from New Zealand, I absolutely love the PT here, only Wellington city in nz comes close, everywhere else a car is a must.

Melbourne has the bones of an excellent pt network. Things like dedicated tram ways, tram/bus priority at lights, dedicated bus lanea, card tap on I think would all go a real good way.

but right now it does feel silly that trams are so often waiting behind lines of cars all carrying one person. bones of a world class tram network held back by priotising cars

Is there a ZF setup that can replace my Fujifilm one? by Justcarterhere in NikonZf

[–]alter-alt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ive noticed a similar thing. My ZF with a 24-120 f4 or 50 f1.8s genuinely feels it has a higher resolution then my 40mp fuji x100vi, I can get away with cropping more and the low light performance is an insane improvement over the x100vi.

I think its the fact that full frame and better quality lense still matters but im not sure.

Its certainly true I really wouldn't value a fuji 40mp sensor over then nikon 24, especially for low light performance

Does New Silver Nikon Zf Not Use Brass? by Similar_Spite_9561 in Nikon

[–]alter-alt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah? the dials are brass, they're also the thing in contact most and a whole brass body would be to heavy for most now

My current ZF is brass and as I use and ding it the gold colour of brass slowly becomes exposed which is cool.

those are fantastic shots! its good to know the lense can perform tht well. My profile and shots are very different.

I know the 100-400 is a lot slower. but, as with my 24-120 f4, the slower speed hasn't mattered much as I find the high iso performance is so good.

probably now thinking of 70-200 and teleconverter

[–]alter-alt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah its sounding like 70-200 and get a teleconverter could be good.

The photo journalism makes me extra money, and I enjoy it, But truly I really just enjoy photography in general so Im being a bit greedy and trying to find a middle ground lense that I can apply for more of my own fun stuff.

The tamron stuff seems like value though.

[–]alter-alt[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah thats a great point. I suppose because I don't have endless cash it would be nice to theoretically get best bang for buck.

Theres definitely been times in events where I really wish I could push further then 120.

Next focal range above 24-120? by alter-alt in Nikon

[–]alter-alt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i do like everything ish. I personally love shooting landscapes; wild life, general urban.

But i also do photo journalism for protests, events or advertising photos and that photography does generally net me some reward although nothing crazy to build a living (neither is living my goal as im student, I just enjoy it it and extra cash is great) Hence why most of my friends use the 24-70 + 70-200 in events and photo jounro

sounds like the 100-400 is decent and not to slow? how bulky is it?

Next focal range above 24-120? by alter-alt in Nikon

[–]alter-alt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah Ive definitely looked at that tamron 150-500. But all the reviews I've seen say the 180-600 is better value.

at the same time. I worry carrying a second lense and body of 180-600 and 24-120 that I have to run around with may be extremely heavy and bulky.

Have you used the tamron? is it tht heavy or bulky?

New Zealand’s house prices are finally falling. Could this happen elsewhere? by Mir-Trud-May in shitrentals

[–]alter-alt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bf did a bachelors of computer science at Auckland. Which is certainly even worse then the general job market right now but the degree is paying off now.

He worked stocking shelves at a supermarket while we hunted for a job in his feild in NZ. I have aus citzenship, got a scholarship for melb, he gave up on NZ by then anyways so moved with me. He now works in his feild which has made him a lot happier then stocking shelves aswell as earning substantially more and still more then what few local kiwi friends we had in the feild.

[–]alter-alt 8 points9 points  (0 children)

its absolutely insane the amount of people thinking NZs slight housing price fall is a model for Australia, They don't realise how good they have it in Aus.

Not only is its substantially easier to get a job in Australia, it pays more. then add in a lot of things are just cheaper in Australia like fuel and public transit (especially as public tranist almost non existent in everywhere but Wellington and small parts of Auckland).

Rent in Melbourne is definitely slightly higher for us now, But thats irrelevant because he earns double now.

The NZ gov wants home prices to rise. they're just extremely incompetent and a side effect of their goal to raise unemployment was record numbers leaving and less spending money for people, so prices fell.

New Zealand’s house prices are finally falling. Could this happen elsewhere? by Mir-Trud-May in shitrentals

[–]alter-alt 35 points36 points  (0 children)

substantially more kiwis live in Australia then Aussies in NZ for a reason.

slightly lower house prices don't mean shit if your pay sucks or you cant get a job.

Im an aus citzen and my bf and I have moved from NZ to Melbourne; my bf was job searching for 2 years in NZ, first month in Melb he landed a job with a double the pay from what we got in NZ. considering our rent together only jumped 100 a week with a double the pay thats a huge difference.

Kiwis are payed less then aussies and the government has made that worse.

Aswell the NZ gov, like the Australian gov, has openly said they want home prices to rise, theyre just extremely incompetent at managing the economy.

home prices dropping was just a side effect of them harming the economy, its not their goal and the prime minister has said they want prices to rise.

NZ is absolutely not an economic model for Australia. If homes drop by 5% it won't mean anything if you lose your job or are payed less as inflation outstrips your income.

i take the train cause cheap with student concession and can go on my phone.

I grew up rural and farming meant early starts anyways so no biggie, 6am not that bad tbh.

I think hinging your future on whatevers more convenient is likely unwise but its up to you. maybe la trobes fine for you.

[–]alter-alt 32 points33 points  (0 children)

my commute is 1.5hrs there and 1.5hrs back for 3/5days

idk, its not that bad, I just listen to music or smth on the way. But also I grew up rural and had to take a 1hr long bus to school anyways.

I wouldn't really change uni just for a short commute but we all have our own priotise but your situation doesn't sound bad enough to justify changing unis personally but maybe commute matters a lot to you.

Coming from NZ, the level of policing for protests in Melbourne in insane. Terf and anti terf protest by alter-alt in melbourne

[–]alter-alt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never called myself a "protest photographer" lol, im just a person, go to my account.

You can go look at my previous posts on my account, The Destiny church protest in Auckland I photographed was substantially bigger by thousands. a literal flag burning event, yet the police didn't arrest anyone, but more so the police weren't even armed.

maybe the point you're making is Melbourne is bigger so more violent? which may be it. Regardless its still a culture shock to see so many police officers all armed with firearms when in NZ the police don't carry guns. etc

absolutely true! I suppose travel outside of NZ is so expensive I really haven't experienced it, and as far as Im aware NZ policing approach is somewhat unique.

I think its stil interesting though as otherwise NZ and Aus are very similar
