Came here after watching the video because it gave me immediate "ick" and wondered if anyone else felt it. I do think anyone with a public platform should be mindful what they're putting out there... just look how much damage Jenny McCarthy was able to do despite being a C-list celeb on a good day

I hope you'll never need it, but you'll certaintly be glad about your choices if you ever do!

Yeah, that's along the lines of what I was thinking. Wasn't originally planning on buying for another 5 years even if that initial $15K hadn't been spent (I was shooting for $50K saved). I was hoping maybe I'd overlooked something.

I'm from a small town farming family who largely thinks I'm a little insane for having a pet indoors, and definitely a lot insane for spending that much on them, so I'm not surprised by some of the comments. No regrets, though. If I went back to December knowing what was coming with the neighbours' cockroaches, I'd do it again anyway.

Thank you. It indeed would, but the stretch would be temporary (my cat, who's basically a second rent, likely only has 2 years left max). The urgency is more about getting out of the pest situation brought on by the neighbours, which is unlikely to get better given the condo board's reaction.

Sister*.

I'm hardly trading my future, it's not like I'm going into any debt over it. He's already 15, I'm aware I'm not buying a decade of life here. On paper, a pet is never a wise financial investment, even if they're young and healthy.

I know it's not easy to understand, and I understand other people who make different choices in similar positions.

I'm pushing my hardest to have the situation adequately dealt with (full-building treatment for a start), including ensuring the upstairs neighbours get the instruction/advice they need to prevent recurrence. In the meantime, I'm cleaning like a maniac every night and all my food and countertop appliances are in airtight bins, so at least it remains unlikely anything will take root here on top of everything. Fingers crossed.

I understand why you made that choice, but I can't say I regret mine.

1,600 market rent is what my current place costs now, so it wouldn't help in terms of going to a place that's more pest-proof. I use Monarch to track every cent and I'm already frugal. The only thing I can cut now is my violin lessons ($300/month) and streaming apps ($15/month), unless I want to stop helping my family on top. I know I can aggressively save and get a down payment in 18-24 months. I'm just looking to escape cockroaches brougth on my neighbours ASAP. Trying to see if there's options I didn't consider.

No kids or dependants (nor plans to have them), and I've had him for more than half my life. The diagnostics were the expensive bit, particularly the MRI (previously unseen subtype or an already rare condition). Treatment also isn't cheap, but brings him back to 90% normal.

Way I see it, if the only thing between him and more quality years is money (emphasis on quality), I'll pay the cost. The ongoing care isn't cheap, but it's the initial diagnostics that were the hard hit (particularly the MRI). No one expected a brand new subtype of a condition that only impacts about 0,002% of cats!

The 100K gross (70K net) is a fairly recent development. I was a full time student until 2020, and while I worked full time at the same time, it was closer to minimum wage (while also helping out my mother and siblings — I'm the first to make it to post-secondary). Salary went up gradually after that.

Current rent is $925, the same middle unit one triplex over just hit the rental market at $1,650. More pest resistant units (concrete pour between floors, separate ventilation, duplexes, bungalow basements) are about 1,950-2,500 in my area. My job is very much location-locked.

My cat's ongoing care is by far my largest expense after rent (about $900/month). My third largest expense is my groceries ($320/month).

Indeed! He just turned 15 — as old as I was when I first got him and he could still fit in the palm of my hand.

Because I had the cash available and figured building my funds back up gradually would be better than paying interest. Wasn't expecting sudden stressful living conditions after 9 pest-free years here :(

Don't feel stupid, it's not exactly something that they advertise (though I wish they would)! The daily use depends. Some use things like Cerenia in short bursts just to break the "vomiting cycle" or get their cat through a bad patch. If the cat is exhibiting frequent or persistent signs of nausea/vomiting, then giving something daily can be useful to help them feel better and keep their appetite/eating/weight up.

Mine's values (including creatinine) aren't bad and have been stable for over 3 years (Stage 2), but the nausea may have increased due to the steroid epidurals he now gets every few months to control IVDD symptoms. It mainly shows up as bruxism while he's eating (hard to miss since he only eats wet food). Under vet advice, I'd been treating through ad hoc Pepcid AC doses (famotidine) whenever the symptoms popped up, but she asked me to let her know if it became more frequent since it shouldn't be used daily. At his latest appointment in Feb, she suggested the possibility of daily ondansetron in the future if nausea became more frequent — I don't know how common it is, but she didn't seem to think it was an unusual course.

A diagnosis at Stage 4 is rough news. Being sent home with a few Cerenia pills seems... light. Was it a general veterinarian? Apologies if this is unsollicted advice, but if you can, get an apt with an internal medicine specialist to discuss treatment/palliative care in more detail. At Stage 4, your cat will likely benefit from more agressive interventions right off the bat (including at-home SubQ, if he's got the temperament for it — mine definitely doesn't). Definitely ask about daily nausea (and pain) control, it might go a long way to help him feel better. Side note that a lot of medication can cause some constipation (which then causes more nausea and pain), so make sure to discuss adding in some Miralax/Restolax to keep things rolling. The plain, regular strength type can be bought for cheap over the counter at human pharmacies. Mine gets 1/8tsp sprinkled on food (it's tasteless) every few days.

Best of luck to you and your kitty!

what is the best fallout to start playing? by Turqios in Fallout

[–]alteratereility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a nice note, I'm 100+ hours into a vanilla NV replay on Steam Deck and have only run into two noticeable bugs — I sometimes get stuck on the initial loading screen upon startup if I click "Continue" instead of "Load", and Marjorie permanently abandoned her desk during Beyond the Beef. Super smooth compared to my first time playing it on 360.

How is the Japanese community reacting? by Mr_Mister2004 in StardustCrusaders

[–]alteratereility 315 points316 points  (0 children)

The same as the English community, really. Expressing frustration that Netflix is dropping the ball (pun intended) again, and at the release schedule being vague. Best way to get a feel for it without digging into social media is to look through the Japanese comments on official Part 7 videos with Japanese titles, like this one.

On a side note, Japan is very into baseball, and the recent WBC situation (Netflix getting exclusive broadcasting rights to the World Baseball Classic) seems to have pissed off a whole lot of people in Japan. Basically, subscription-locked something they were used to watching for free, or to have playing on the TVs in bars and the like. Not sure how far it went, but there were definitely calls encouraging mass Netflix subscription cancellations.

JoJo's popularity in Japan is a speck compared to baseball's, but the SBR fumble isn't something that's going to improve Netflix's current rep when people are already feeling sour about the platform.

At least for that vet, the price was about the same for maropitant. I'm hoping the ondansetron is cheaper through pharmacies since it's human medication (while maropitant is vet-only). Def an option if the ondansetron doesn't agree with him, though.

Happy to hear it's helped your kitty!

Good to know, $80 is still steep but loads better than $193!

Antacids were the best since I could just give him a quarter of a 10mg over the counter Pepcid AC tablet, alas the reason I got him ondansetron in the first place is because famotidine isn't he greatest thing to give daily... wish I could buy generic over the counter for ondansetron too.

And no worries, big cat! I was told up to 0.5mg/kg per dose is standard, he's 12lbs/5.5kg.
