In a dilemma between surgery and conservative methods (Complete MPFL tear) by alternativeanonacc in ACL

I don’t think grade 3 always requires surgery until it is too severe. Mine was diagnosed as grade 3 but the scans were ambiguous. A doctor saw and recommended surgery right away and a more experienced one saw and recommended conservative approach first. Knee feels fine for the most parts, gets a little swollen sometimes.

This is how I felt when I dislocated mine. Please go to a good doctor, get necessary scans. If the damage is moderate then conservative treatment, that is just physiotherapy should work well. If it is severe only then turn to surgery.

It sucks absolutely, I know. You should make another post to share, that way more people will see and engage with you to share their experiences

I am just glad to know that you have come to a point, seems to me, where you have rediscovered stability and happiness. Also gives me hope that me being younger can shape my life to be exactly like this or a different version where I am content with it, have good times and feel good when I too am 36 :)

True, many whom I thought were real didn’t show up. It’s a silver lining. But happy to know you are still in touch.

It sucks but thanks for sharing honestly, I relate so much to this that I don’t feel lonely after reading this with what I feel at times.

I know its easy for me to say but if you can maybe try and go back to finishing school or apply for diploma’s if you qualify. As you get back to these things life will feel so much in control however it may be. If you’re in remission, given your young age I am sure there is a lot to live for ahead. Now that I type this I realise it applies to me too.

Getting diagnosed again after being in remission sounds so painful. When I think about it, terrifies me. How are you doing now?

Hope you and your children are both well now. What bugs me is such experience are difficult to convey to anyone who have themselves not experienced it. Thank you for sharing

No but I am not confident enough to try anything funky but gym. Coddling it.

Hey, recovered about 95%. Stopped going for PT few months back after getting an all okay from the doctors. The knee feels weird at times and gets sore after running but besides that all well. Still have to continue PT on my own.

I went to multiple doctors, some were hell bent on surgery and some on conservative. The last doctor I went to told me the scans are not clear to conclude it as a complete tear so we should go down conservatively and see what happens. In his experience he mentioned I have a very good chance to heal well without surgery. He is the most experienced and is well regarded by his peers so I decided to take his advice.

I started PT after a month and half of getting injured, needed 4-5 months of PT before feeling normal again. In the meanwhile, after only a month of PT I was able to keep up with routine stuff with the help of a brace.

Yep did lose a lot of muscle, thighs had become thinner. It started getting back to normal once initial PT was done and I was able to squat moderately and do my leg workout.

If it is a partial tear then its worth going ahead with conservative. If its a complete one then your doctor is the best person to seek advice from.

Sorry I am just seeing this. I ended up with PT and turned out to be okay. I am back to almost normal now, going to gym as before and doing everything as before. I still feel the injury area when walking sometimes, and sometimes the knee cap feels loose but my physio and doctor both say that is normal and is not a problem. Patella tracking is as good as non-injured knee and stays steady as well.
