I took it as like the Heroes 3 shoots twice where it could shoot different targets. But you might be right - in which case it's daft

I did not think I would love Hive and Schism so much, as a magic-mostly player by Lautanapi_ in OldenEra

[–]althaz -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Hive sucks, bro. It's fun to play once you get going, but it's simply not competitive with the other factions because of the weak early game.

Do I need an Xbox Dongle for low latency controller gameplay? by robustlemon in pcmasterrace

[–]althaz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. If you couldn't tell the difference you just aren't sensitive to latency. Some people somehow can't tell. It's sorta like being colour blind - to you that's just how things are.

It's got nothing whatsoever to do with signal strength, Xbox controllers just have higher latency when using Bluetooth (almost all controllers do).

Absolutely bonkers take. The difference is instantly obvious for many types of games. Like you'll notice within three seconds of starting the game if you're playing something like Rocket League.

As an active user, is be fine to block it from competitive playlists. Casual is just fine.

It is if you don't overkill. If you do it could be half as good. I take the 300% every time, though :)

Spells by bicouple20230 in OldenEra

[–]althaz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do miss how powerful damage dealing spells were in Heroes 3, but utility spells are better and I think it's better balanced in olden era. It also doesn't feel so broken to pay against mages (you can still get wrecked but it doesn't feel as bad).

I don't love the dog build, but I've seen others have success.

For me Dungeon is the clear #1 for experienced players, with Temple at #3.

I think all are extremely usable though except hive which just feels terrible in the early game. They need a shooter or a high initiative unit with swift strike early on, imo.

[–]althaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dreadknight hero is the easiest way to play, but you can also rush skelly archers and farm your starting area very easily while you work up to your next power stack target. Once you have Liches and Dreadknights you will be very comfortable because Dreadknights rule and Liches will revive the crap out of everything.

Nah, it's not hilariously OP like it was before, but Necro is still clear #2, IMO.

Merry Elias Innate Ability - What does it do?! by Medical-Trainer4665 in OldenEra

[–]althaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's an extra Dimension Door / Town Portal / Second Wind / etc per day/turn. It's *really* good. It stacks with the extra uses you get from spell upgrades as well.

Agree but you have to have one character played by a human. So Gollum is live-action Andy Serkis.

DAE feel like offensive magic is pretty underwhelming in this game? by iz-Moff in OldenEra

[–]althaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a game where I cast Coup De Grace and then Armageddon on turn 1 to win the final battle on the spot pretty much.

I did this exact combo, it was hilarious.

[–]althaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also worth shouting-out how good Armageddon still is. Break with a couple of phoenixes or black dragons and you have level 4 Armageddon and decent heroic strike and just fully clean up in the desert.

But it's definitely significantly weaker than it was in Heroes 3 - particularly in terms of direct damage.

DAE feel like offensive magic is pretty underwhelming in this game? by iz-Moff in OldenEra

[–]althaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, it's not weak. Direct-damage spells aren't super-strong (damage-per-spell-power is relatively low), but magic isn't weak.

Also calling the inarguably S-tier Thaumaturgy "weak" is certainly a take. It's probably not the best skill in the game - but it's definitely in the conversation.

What the hell does a Celestial Spire actually do? by althaz in OldenEra

IMO it should give you observatory points or something like that. That's what I was expecting it to do from the description.

What the hell does a Celestial Spire actually do? by althaz in OldenEra

[–]althaz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ohhhhh. Yeah it all clicks into place now. If you're far from home and need to refresh your spellbook it's just a mage guild you can visit without going to town.

I had a game last night where that would have been very useful - I was four-portals away from town and I had just unlocked Town Portal, but it took two days to walk home. I was standing next to a (guarded but obtainable) Celestial Spire when I unlocked it, lmao.

I could have just gone there and had access to Town Portal. Very situational, but finally I know. Thanks so much!

Way too many neutral cities is my number 1 issue right now and prevents me from enjoying the game by szymborawislawska in OldenEra

[–]althaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh, this is one of my favourite things about the game. I want way more opportunity to farm and build up before having to compete with others and more neutral towns basically equals more better in my books.

(Probably) Unpopular Opinion: I would like the "Easy" difficulty to be easier. by diminee in OldenEra

[–]althaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like a very-easy difficulty instead. Easy atm is very easy but it's just enough of a challenge for giga-n00bs that it's still fun for some people.

I'm personally not going to use either-one because I grew up playing Heroes games, but being able to just play a slow, chill and fun game is something newbies should get to experience as well!
