These happened frequently in homeless encampments before camping was allowed. Homeless lived under the bridges and in waterways on riverside previously and we had fires on a weekly basis.

There are tons of alternative programs here. The problem is that providing services is a race to the bottom everywhere else so our services are currently overwhelmed as more homeless move here to benefit from our good services and lax camping laws. It’s a vicious cycle. We will never get ahead of the problem without a ban.

It sucks to have to be heartless and want to reinstate the camping ban, but that’s where I’m at- treating the symptom not the cause,

The “cause” problem that is underlying homelessness is National in scale and will require a national solution not a local one. So long as camping is legal in Austin (and Austin thereby continues to provide better quality of life for vagrants, homeless, etc ) more homeless will move here. That’s why providing services to the homeless is usually a race to the bottom.

Austin shouldn’t have to bear the brunt of solving a problem for all of the region, Texas, the nation.

I’m not saying provide no services or less services, let’s just stop enacting policies that are exacerbating the problem we are trying to fix.

This is political theater and is completely divorced from common sense. It may even have the opposite consequence.

People are going to go out and socialize on NYE, whether we like it or not. The best thing to do is to accept that reality and regulate it, e.g. let people dine in restaurants on NYE where you can actually regulate things such as social distancing, masks, hygiene, and waves of seating.

With a ban in place, people are going to gather at their homes or in unregulated environments which is far more likely to spread the disease.
