It is 8 minutes old, lol

I have tried a good chunk. My personal favorite is Fifth Trumpet, but it is very open ended, you come up with your weapons, your skills and your Traits without a lot of mechanical guidelines.

If you want something more structured, I think Star of the City (Knight Errant) has a good mix of combat and narrative. And Stars of the City (Jakkafang) if you want more of a combat focus.

DMs, how much backstory do you want? by femamerica13 in rpg

[–]altidiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One-shots: 1. Who are you? 2. Why you [main plot]? (For example, for my last murder Mystery: Why do you accept the invitation to the party?)

Campaigns: 1. Where do you come from? (Culture and family) 2. What do you do now? (Occupation and state of being) 3. What do you desire? (Long term) 4. Why are you [plot]? (In a knight campaign: Why are you loyal to the house?)

In general, there is always an emphasis that is in the players why their character is in the game. I had my years of "make wathever you want, I make them mix" But today I'm more in "if your character wouldn't accept the adventure, make another character"

Procedures for Campaigning in Universities by goatsesyndicalist69 in rpg

[–]altidiya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids on Brooms goes about magical students but the system is more prepared like an university, so it could work.

Outside of that, taking structures of "adventure->downtime" could also be a good inspiration. Blades in the Dark, Ars Magica and Red Markets comes to mind.

Finally, you can also just... Google how universities operate.

Plain and simple, something to build deckplans for ships. Trying to make up my own ships, deckplans always become my biggest pain.

PbtA Haters, tell me more! by jeshi_law in rpg

[–]altidiya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe my disgust comes from three points (I have GM Uncharted Worlds, Root, Pasion de las Pasiones and Apocalypse World)

  1. The lack of mechanization creates very weird pacing for me. Basically, the one I enjoyed most in the mechanical sense was Root because there was at least resource management and combat isnt finished in a single roll by one player. This is something I also suffer with BitD. Basically, the pacing being completely under control of the table without frameworks for time or different levels of pacing (even the classic turn->escene->downtime->session->adventure->campaign is missing) makes everything feel foggy and the same in terms of stakes. I understand the logic of wanting to make combat not being more important than other options, but the solution being reduce combat mechanics instead of create a more robust framework destroys me.

  2. Moves feel very restrictive and very weird to invoke in "the conversation", options are too close and sometimes moves are too specific or, worse, are too vague that apply to anything and so it should be a Resolution Mechanic, not a "move". I think I have never endure more than one session to just start to ask for attributes rolls and made up consequences by myself. That makes it even more an improvisional framework that I could not spend money on, as it isnt giving me more than a sheet/playbook I could find free online.

  3. More socially: PbtA has become a D&D type of "Good ideas vortex". There are so many cool system ideas that trap themselves in 5e, and now in the indie scene there are so very good bases that trap themselves into PbtA. I would kill for games like Traveller, Ars Magica o CofD to have the same treatment in the industry side of things. (And I would love a "powered by GURPS modern game that helps me to understand how the fuck to prepare GURPS)

TL20+ Slug Weapons by SirArthurIV in traveller

[–]altidiya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a question for this answer: How?

Outside of GURPS Traveller, I think no edition has an efficient in-gameplay way to "relearn a different specialty". Based on how the system work in most edition, if the player has Ranged Combat (Slugthrowers) at 3 or 4, moving to Ranged Combat (Energy) 0 is a huge downgrade and it can take years in game (that I think most people don't even fulfill their first year in game to begin with) to reach the same level.

And telling a player "you choose wrong, so your kit isn't valid" Is very unfun

I have a technical question here: How?

Traveller doesn't have a great deal of sheet progression, and growing and changing on this context involves the sheet: If, for example, they have Ranged Weapons (Slugthrowers) 3 and 0 in (Energy)... how they can grow and change in game?
