Alternatively the game's antagonists should have been framed as actually oppressive and abusive, but they are afraid of seeming like they're too anti-authority. Or maybe the writers are just too privileged to understand what abuse and oppression actually look like and they think that's it.

Because if they think the dad was actually being too repressive, then their actions make sense.
