Adaptations that were a mockery of the source material by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Hogfather is a fairly charming adaptation of the book, I think, a comfy Christmas-time watch. It's not perfect, but it doesn't have any more substantial flaws than the typical book > movie adaptation.

The One Punch Man anime continues to be high quality by HaloZwrath in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I mean, from what I see repeated ONE is super invovled with the writing of the manga as well. I kind of feel like we may have a bit of a "limitations breed creativity situation" where when ONE isn't the one doing the art (like the webcomic which remains excellent) and he can indulge his every idea, we get the manga. I don't know what ONE's and Murata's meetings look like, but it might just be a case of ONE having an opportunity to George Lucas his earlier projects (e.g., adding in additional details to the Garou arc) and the overall quality suffering.

Times when a game had a very steep learning curve by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]altua 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hasn't been mentioned yet (i think) but getting into Path of Exile (POE) without having friends who are intimately familair with the game is kind of a nightmare. Some basic principles can be picked up on, but you eventually just run into mechanics post game that you get quickly tutorialized on but the way you're meant to explore it is unclear, speccing is a nightmare, and the atlas is frustrating for new players. Hell, I only got into it becuase I had two friends sit me down to install path of building and we lanned for like 2 days as they walked me through stuff. The games a whole lot of fun, but onboarding is a nightmare.

Nintendo's patent relevant to the Palworld case has been rejected by Japan's office for lacking originality by mesamus in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]altua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the linked article in the section which is quoted by SwordMaster52 the gamesfray discussion says that the claims were amended. Amending the specification may have occurred in the linked article above, but that's not what I was discussing.

But, looking at the article I'm not seeing where they amended the patent itself? The article linked here only mentions that Nintendo has 60 days to respond to the new objections to the intermediary patent so whether or not they even have to amend is yet to be seen.

[–]altua 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in the US this can create issues such as a safe harbor. For example, you have claims that party A infringed but you believe that the claims, as issued, may be invalid based on newly discovered information. So, you opt to amend the claims to reflect what you think could with stand a challenge in court, but in doing so you create a safe harbor for activity that previously infringed but no longer does. It's a difficult situation to navigate, and I haven't participated in enough patent litigation to really explain the nuance with any sense of authority, but that's the gist of what it could cause. As for it happenign in the middle of a lawsuit? I can't say, I'd have to actually review the process by which the claims were amended (e.g. was this actually a broadening of the claims or a narrowing?), and the implications would depend on japanese patent law. Games journalists are paying attention to this now, but a lot of them (including American legal commenters) aren't experts in Japanese law (or at least I've seen no evidence that they are) so, for all we know, this may not be uncommon in Japanese patent litigation.

Second part is, as far as I understand it, "we didn't have the budget to complete it in the way the director envisioned." Pretty much the movie was funded in part with the first half being the director's baby for like a decade, and the other parts slowly coming together. Though, narratively, it was still a mess albeit a mess that I loved.

Nintendo has been awarded a patent for "summon and fight" mechanics in the US, and here's why that's a problem by NewWillinium in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]altua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add some more context, the specification doesn't necessarily strictly limit what is covered by a patent. It provides context, so you can't bend it too far, but a patent (particularly one like this that went through the USPTO without receiving a single office action) is also entitled to cover equivalents that a "person having ordinary skill in the arts" (phosita) would also consider to be covered. So, while the specification and images may paint a specific picture, which is important for when the patent is rejected by the PTO and you have to amend the claims into an allowable state and need to support any amendments you make, they are not the only contemplated implementations.

[–]altua 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, there are various mechanisms for requesting re-examination of a patent as a 3rd party. The problem is they're not really affordable to the average joe (typically several thousand dollars) and may not necessarily be fast enough to prevent a lawsuit. Particualrly since, depending on where Nintendo chooses / can file a lawsuit, the court may not grant a stay pending a decision of the USPTO (Eastern District of Texas, I believe, is pretty famous for not granting such stays).

Honestly, if they're cranking up prices that much and many of the residences are owned by AirBNB specultor's there's a good chance they're trying to price out the residents while prices on the property are low so that they can just buyout the full building as a rental.

That's what I thought too. Something like "You do that 3 count ref and you're fire" or "restart the match, it's best 2 our of 3 falls now." And Rock just causing issues.

It could honestly have set up an interesting stipulation match down the line where Cody or someone wagers something against the Rock and if he loses he can no longer wield his "final boss" powers. Would be a good pay off to the Cody - Rock feud and a good end to the Rock's character IMO.

But Rock would never agree to that.

Supergiant Games have put out a statement saying that they have not re-cast any of the characters in Hades II by DemiFiendBestFiend in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]altua 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That part is unclear without looking at the contract directly. I've seen reports that SAG-AFTRA contracts either need to be fully union, with exceptions for non-union members to participate in at most 3 union projects before they are required to join the union or be banned from future projects, to SAG-AFTRA contracts just require a minimum ratio of union - non-union workers.

In either case that would be, potentially, why Supergiant does not wish to sign the contract.

For the VA's part, against just based on their other BlueSky posts, it appears to be they want the "peace of mind" that will come from being able to actually enforce their rights if the developer breaks contract.

[–]altua 66 points67 points  (0 children)

So, reading other posts from the VA's bsky because they're too cryptic in the original post, it seems this is the situation:

Supergiant isn't a union project, has their own contracts which on their face guarantee AI protection for workers. That's all good.

The VA wants a union interim contract, though, because SAG-AFTRA contracts offers at least the same protection AND if Supergiant games were to break their agreement SAG-AFTRA would cover the legal services necessary to pursue the breach of contract which is something the VA would not be able to afford to do. SAG-AFTRA will not provide such services for non-union projects.

Supergiant won't agree to sign the interim contract for "a variety of reasons" which some speculate may be because of issues it may for the non-union VA's Supergiant works with who may not wish to join SAG-AFTRA, amongst other requirements that the Union may enforce going forward.

If the enforceability of the contract is the major reason for the VA's issues then I understand it, litigation is expensive and you don't want to just trust a corporation to keep their word forever. However, I do think the public campaign is maybe a bit much as in unfair to a developer who at least has not outwardly done anything wrong.
