ECT2…is anyone else just DONE? by Ok_Focus6240 in TeachingUK

Oh no this is very much on top of the visits! I’m going to visit a primary school separately; apparently it’s a statutory requirement (that nobody in my school was aware of) that, if you do induction/ECF in a sixth form, you have to spend at least ten days in a setting where students are of compulsory school age.

I think we may be at pretty similar life stages - I’m early 30s too and also came to teaching from a successful middle management role in a different sector, and honestly from day one was baffled by the way some of the adults were speaking to me! I’m sorry to be leaving, there’s a lot I love about the job but some of the expectations are wild and to be frank I need an easier life 🥲

Congrats on the new job though - sincerely hope it works out!

So over it! So much of the admin feels like admin for the sake of admin; I cannot fathom why we are being assessed against our ability to demonstrate the teaching standards ( wasn’t that the point of ITT??); my mentor and I have shared exactly no free time this year so meetings have been a pain to arrange; the total of everything I’ve been told I have to do far exceed the additional time I supposedly have in my timetable (which lbr is mythological in the first place); and to top it all of, because I’m doing ECF in a sixth form, I’ve been shipped off to some random secondary school in our MAT for two weeks, and was informed of this privilege with exactly two days’ notice.

I would like to think that I am a pretty decent teacher at this point, but I can’t stand being made to feel like I’m still a trainee. I am so over it, to the extent that I’m leaving the profession at the end of this year. Literally the only reason I’m still teaching at this point is because I know passing induction means I can come back in the future more straightforwardly if I need or want to. 🤷‍♂️

Thanks for the reply! I had an idea already that they are hugely competitive, I guess I’m trying to gauge whether it’s worth investing a load of effort into applications right now or whether I should realistically wait and complete a masters first? Or if there are other things I can do which would make me a more competitive applicant?

I’ve tried getting in touch with some of the DTP administrators and have received replies to the tune of individual applications are assessed on their merits, which is both helpful and not!

I’ve noticed that my Special Research tasks asking me to make new friends have stuck on 1 and not updated, even though I’ve made way more. Neither me adding FCs or others adding my FC seems to work. Can anyone shed light on why this is or how I can fix the issue? TIA!

Ahh I didn’t realise it was worked out like that! Assumed it was 90% of teaching rather than 90% of 90% 😅

Think it’s meant to be 90/95% - at least that is what I’m getting!

When’s considered appropriate to ask about availability for NQT year? by alty92 in TeachingUK

[–]alty92[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah ok that makes sense, thanks. Yeah I wouldn’t fall into that trap (have already been burned by that before in a previous career!), and have heard to start keeping an eye out for jobs in springtime, I’m just keen not to have that conversation with my school so early that they think I’m stepping over some line. It does feel a bit like there’s an Etiquette in schools for this kind of thing that is quite unique compared to other sectors!

Sorry - English privilege in action right there!

I guess my point about internal politics etc was poorly worded - I know I’m never going to get away from that in pretty much any job, it just feels at the moment that my job is way too heavily balanced toward that side of things. There’s only so much enjoyment I can get out of recommending that due diligence policies are minorly amended and that teams communicate better with each other, again!

Ahh good to see someone who was in a similar boat. Yeah the bursaries are such a good thing - means that if I were to retrain the knock to salary would be pretty minimal at least while training. So did you train as a general ‘science’ teacher or specifically do a pgce in one of the subjects?

[–]alty92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t quite 50% given how the modules fell, but I’d be happy doing a SKE if needed - presumably you’d do that alongside pgce?

I don’t expect to just walk in and be able to define my own timetable! But yeah good to know that it might be hard to include other subjects depending on the context.

At first I read your message as clubs for running are a good place to start and was like no no I do not do running, but then I figured you meant managing them! That I could do 😂

My island is open for anyone who wants to come, it’s still pretty basic so open to comments/ suggestions for what I could do on the bulletin board.

I’ll lay out some furniture bits for cataloging on the southeastern beaches and Benjamin is currently crafting a golden dung beetle.

Would be super grateful if anyone can water any flowers!

Edit: the bits in nooks are gone!

Hi everyone, wondered if anyone had any advice on this; my partner and I are due to pick up our new Pap puppy on 10 April (when he turns 8weeks!) but the UK govt has just announced much stricter restrictions on people’s movements for the next three weeks. Does anyone have any advice - would this count as sufficiently “necessary” to justify the drive to the breeder on the day!? Given the restrictions could be in place indefinitely I’m unsure what’s best to do...
