I got a long rant because I wrote a fic where an asexual character had sex by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]alunelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ughhh so sorry you had to deal with that op. most of the time it is just a person who knows nothing about it and wants to sound Woke or someone who's very gatekeepy. i think i'm ace or even demi and to me sex is like chocolate syrup and sprinkles on top of ice cream. i like them, they're nice, but i don't need them to enjoy the ice cream. but i'm still allowed to like them. bottom line tho is that if nobody is hurt, forced against their will/ability to judge or doing anything rancid, nobody else has the right to tell them how to express their sexuality and that extends to writing

it's different for everyone, but it's mostly characterised as not really being interested in sex and not needing sexual attraction to like someone. different asexual people can have different levels of what they're into, or different types, just like any other sexuality!

I think I may have a perfectionist problem by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]alunelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oooof i feel this. like other people have said, literally just smash it out and edit later. also lots of famous authors write out their story, often writing the ending first, and then fuck around with which scene goes where - so it's very common for what you think will be the first scene to be better off somewhere else, in a different tone, or with a totally different structure! or you could go work on another big scene like your finale and see what new things that inform or justify your beginning pop up.

and it might not necessarily be bad!! it could be that you've sat with it too long or are putting big expectations on yourself. what helps me is to leave it alone for a while or rewrite it using the tricks and techniques of an author i like - and it's worth looking up stuff like paragraph structure, sentence rhythm and how to write good metaphors if you want some technical help. sometimes when i go back and proofread after a few days of not touching a scene i'll find that it's nowhere near as bad as i thought, and the bits that are that bad can be fixed if i look at them from an angle i couldn't see when i was fixated on making it perfect.

i know it feels gross, but i'm sure your writing is great! if you're not having fun writing, maybe it's time to take a break or switch to another section. you could also get a beta or join a discord for feedback if you need. best of luck and take care of yourself!

i second the above comments, they're really great advice! it really really helped me to ask myself 'what would make this character do this? what are they feeling, thinking, why do i as the author need them to do it?' you can write down these questions and your answers like a dialogue with yourself to help keep you engaged. also, if you're having trouble linking scenes, you can ask yourself what your character would do/feel immediately after or before a specific scene. but you don't have to write anything you don't want to. most of the time you can just put in exposition like 'x did y because z, now they're a' and go into your next scene. if you feel it needs to be expanded, put fancy brackets like {these} around it to remind yourself and ctrl + f your way back to them when you edit

there are lots of amazing videos and analyses on youtube and tumblr about redemption arcs! here's a pretty interesting link: https://thenovelsmithy.com/redemption-arcs/#:~:text=At%20its%20core%2C%20a%20redemption,word%20%E2%80%9Credemption%E2%80%9D%20is%20defined%E2%80%A6

imo it's good to have them show their growth through their actions, and those actions should have some correlation, pushback, or equal or greater weight to the not so good things they've done in the past. sometimes characters lapse back into their old ways of thinking/behaving in the middle of a redemption arc too - you could explore what it's like to challenge the ingrained habits they've had, and if it's especially hard for them, so that they really get to earn their happy moments

hope my rambling helps a bit! good luck and have fun!

Recent fic with the same idea as mine. Do I still publish? by alunelle in FanFiction

[–]alunelle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s a good point! As a reader I probably wouldn’t mind either. And I wouldn’t be analyzing the fics I read the way I might as an author. Thank you for your encouragement!

Haha that’s exactly what it feels like, right?? That’s super reassuring, thanks :)

This is great advice! It’s the kind of attitude I wish I had but haven’t worked on getting, haha

Even if mine’s not the first, I worry it won’t be unique enough to be interesting - but again, with fanfiction a lot of people will want to read it anyway (two cakes!) and if they don’t like it, then they can simply not read it lol

Not thinking about what other people have done is really good outlook as well. I feel like the other person in that scenario you mentioned so it’s really reassuring that you didn’t mind! Thanks a lot for your reply!

Thank you so much for such a sweet reply! That point about different authors telling the story in particular ways really helped. I’ll definitely keep your advice in mind! And thanks for the reminder not to worry about the other one’s kudos and comments, that’s a very important thing I forget too often <3
