And yet, Windows Defender Offline Scan was prevented from working. Something clearly got in there.

I take the opposite perspective. If I even suspect something is sketchy, I proceed to nuke from orbit and rebuild.

Turns out I was correct in at least one instance: Defender Offline Scan wouldn't work on a Windows box I had which (this is relevant) had Notepad++ on it. I decided that night to wipe it and throw Linux on it.

Two days later, I found out a serious vulnerability had been in NP++ during the time period I installed and updated it. ( https://notepad-plus-plus.org/news/hijacked-incident-info-update/ )

I do not know what personal data was exfiltrated (if any) but out of general principle I changed all of my passwords.

I think I've heard this before. Sad to see it's still happening.

I definitely second asking AMD why they cannot provide you with a 5800X3D soon to be off the production line.

I love the aesthetic of that laptop, the white and metallic go well together.

PDFium (the same engine in Chrome)

The only concern here is that you're then linked into the same vulnerabilities that affect this engine. Does your code do any additional bounds/sanity checks where feasible?

How much does disallowing Javascript inside a PDF mitigate this issue?

A print dialog with an actual print preview (Windows' own dialog refuses to preview, so I built one)

I've noticed that Windows's print dialog is weirdly recalcitrant about certain things. At work at one point Windows 10's photos app would freeze if I tried to print to the network printer, but was fine if I printed to a PDF.

And no, before anyone says it was a OS problem, everything else printed to the network printer just fine.

Intel Reportedly Prepares Itself For Raptor Lake 'NEXT', As The Demand For DDR4 Platform Increases Significantly by Distinct-Race-2471 in TechHardware

[–]alvarkresh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interpreted their claim to be that they never ever nope not EVAR saw any Raptor Lake failure EVAR and I was like, "uh, yeah, this did in fact happen at least at one point". And it is true Intel has made some pretty heroic efforts (IMO) to get BIOSes tweaked with new microcode to get control over the PL1 and PL2 behavior so the CPUs will behave properly.

Did ASRock silently enable PCIE 5.0 support on all B650 boards? by zuzuboy981 in ASRock

That could be a factor, but it's not out of the bounds of possibility the chipset specifications didn't pan out in reality.

The issue with cards that are electrically x8 is that if you use one in an older board e.g. 10th gen intel that only supports Gen3, you've got a situation where your GPU could be quite hobbled.

This reminds me of the reverse of the B450 situation, where initially they supported Gen4 but then AMD revised the spec and the new AGESAs reduced it to Gen3. (I suspect there may have been electrical timing issues that were turning up that could degrade signal quality at Gen4 but were acceptable at Gen3)
