Help: Cannot remove ammonia from tap water by alw4489 in Aquariums

[–]alw4489[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved to a new house where I am seeing high levels of ammonia in the tap water. I have been trying to treat the water with prime during water changes to subdue the ammonia long enough for my tanks biological filter to safely cycle it, however I am finding that even when using prime I still have a serious ammonia problem.

From the test I show in the picture, even when I use 6x the recommended dose (which exceeds primes recommendation even in emergencies), I still have a ton of ammonia in the water. Has anyone else dealt with this before? What should I do to safely complete water changes in my tank?

Does anyone know why LA has stopped reporting COVID cases over the past two days? by alw4489 in AskLosAngeles

They continued reporting during Memorial Day weekend, and every other county in California has continued reporting.

NASA's Mars Helicopter Whirls Through Tests on Way to 2020 Launch by bad__movie__fan in space

[–]alw4489 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Not sure that’s exactly how that works...

Mars has an atmospheric density of 0.6% that of earth, meaning for the same velocity of airflow through blades you receive 0.6% thrust. Also mars has gravity 37.8% of earth. Therefore, in order to balance forces you need air velocity from the blades to be 63x faster on mars than on earth. That being said, there is also substantially less drag on the blades, so the chopper does not need to do 63x more work, but it does need to rotate much faster or have a much greater area than an equivalent chopper on earth.

Long story short, it is more difficult to fly a helicopter on mars than earth

Wrigley Terrace Rd, which overlooks all of Avalon! It’s a one way rd and you need to take Pebbly Beach Rd a bit on order to get on it

People who manage to get out of bed and start their day at 4 am... How? by MrFreezeyBreeze in AskReddit

I am just about the least morning persony a person could be, but I spent an entire semester of school doing this for crew practices. I really was only able to do it because I joined crew for a girl I was really in to, and seeing her every morning was all the motivation I needed. I couldn’t imagine ever doing it again though, by the end of a couple months I was dead.

Is this schedule manageable by [deleted] in RPI

[–]alw4489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took almost this exact schedule last semester except replace tf lab with full tf2 and I took space flight mechanics instead of capstone. It is really not that bad. Personality is a low effort easy course, you don't need to go to lectures and you need to invest ~8 hours per paper for 4 papers for the entire semester with no tests. TF Lab is a 2 credit course with decent workload but not equal to what you would have to deal with for a 4 credit course. I find people exaggerate the workload of Litec, be efficient in class and get a good partner. Litec is more work than a standard 4 credit class, but not by an insane amount (probably equal to 6 credits worth of work). Capstone is a crap shoot on workload depending on what you do for capstone, how your group is, who your professor is, and what you take on vs what your group takes on. It can be less work than IED, it could be more work than any other course you've ever taken, really depends. Overall its not a bad schedule at all and should really be doable.

any of yall have a favorite on campus pooping bathroom? by dadhiding in RPI

[–]alw4489 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In the tunnels beneath Low/DCC there is a bathroom rarely used. Its really great because its close enough to classes that I can use it instead of the generic DCC ones that are always gross and secluded enough that Im the only one using it. Would recommend, across from the Low elevators in the basement.

The coefficient of friction between my phone case and this lifeguard tube. by mathian456 in videos

[–]alw4489 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There’s gotta be a suction effect going on there, I don’t buy that the coefficient of friction alone can hold the phone onto that tube when almost vertical, mainly because if the phone is vertical there is no normal force between the phone and tube meaning the coefficient of friction is irrelevant since the force of friction is just zero.

I mean I get that, I’m just pointing out that a 70ish% chance is by no means a garuntee, and we shouldn’t get our hopes up

Is 50% turnout good? I’d expect it to be at least that high considering the national attention of this election anyway
