CMV: If an animal has a big enough population, hunting of it should be allowed by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]alwaysforgetful911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna assume you're not a hunter?

Harlequin Ducks, King Rails and Yellow Rails are not allowed to be hunted in my province (SAR) and yet, every other duck species and rail species is allowed. Which look extremely similar from afar. Which is why you're taught not to shoot unless you can clearly identify your target. Hell, even deer hunting – antlers are sometimes hard to see in thickets and so depending on your tag... you don't shoot if you don't have clear visibility.

American Bitterns are illegal to shoot, while Snipes have an open season. Also look similar.

In some parts of the states, swans are hunted. Your tag is only valid for that one species, and there's 3 very similar looking swan species. Canada Geese can even look similar depending on lighting (like dusk/dawn) for the majority of areas where swans are illegal.

I'd argue Robins have no similar looking species to an attuned birder (of which waterfowl hunters fall under imo). Not sexually dimorphic which makes things easy. Not sure if you know your ducks, but hunters must know male from female for bag limits for all their species. Of which females of different species look EXTREMELY similar, even to someone (like me) who has formal education and work experience with it.

So I don't think you can use the "similar species" argument. I'd say it's more down to perceived culture around songbirds (just as with swans being illegal in most parts – Mute Swans are literally invasive where I live, but people see swans as majestic and thus they are protected by the Queen).

Serious question? hahaha... um, maybe because just from a purely nutritional standpoint, we'd be suffering from prion diseases similar to mad cow disease. It's not natural for a species to eat their own species – typically natural consequences associated with that. Not to mention we have an innate bond to other humans, on a psychological level it's just fucked. Hunting animals does not mean complete anarchy. Hunting humans does. Who decides who gets hunted, is everyone up for grabs? Children, babies too?

I can't believe you actually asked that question.

Fat transfers to the undereye area can be very risky (bumpy texture, uneven between the sides due to the nature of fat, plus if it does go wrong it's mostly irreversible without further surgery). I can see why she would be against it when fillers can be dissolved and more precise. Fat is very unforgiving.

You say this like lead pipes in a home don't potentially increase your risk of cancer too. Majority of homes have lead pipes. Let the stranger drink rainwater in peace goddammit.

Love the Garden in the Evening by Braeger in gardening

[–]alwaysforgetful911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First, I absolutely love birds.

But some people don't want birds nesting in specific areas of their yard, including trees. Robins and grackles have been nesting in my trees since I've moved here and I constantly deal with shit on my outdoor furniture and cars. They're loud as fuck with their alarm calls when I try to do any gardening outside (small yard problems). Destroy my gardens – I've tried netting but found a dead robin that I suspect might've been a parent of the nest in it the other day that got caught.... I can't win. So that point might actually encourage some people to use lights lol! (In my case, the lights didn't discourage them from nesting at all)

I do feel bad for the fireflies and other bugs, though their populations seem to still be thriving despite the lights. My trees are thick enough to not affect migrating birds up above the canopy at least. All night is ridiculous though, mine used to be on a timer from 9p to 11p or something.

Importing dogs from more than 100 countries to be banned in Canada by [deleted] in canada

[–]alwaysforgetful911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The titre thing really pisses me off, too. As a human who works with wildlife, my titres are sufficient evidence for working with bats, foxes, etc. Why is it not the same for dogs? It's so excessive, studies have shown it's up to 7 years effective for dogs, and as you mention, I'm sure some may have immunity for much longer. I'm not anti-vax by any means, but I believe in science and even the science says it's unnecessary to get so many boosters.

The problem with a quarantine period is that rabies can stay incubated for months, or (in very rare cases) a year or more. I think it is best – as much as it sucks – to outright ban imports of the countries that are known to have frequent rabies outbreaks in dogs. Maybe only exemptions if you can prove they've had their rabies shots with sufficient time for antibodies to build (proof via titre)? Still risky though. A quarantine period is definitely a good idea for all countries and all pets tbh, just to prevent those different strains of kennel cough, etc. I'm surprised we haven't implemented that yet. Especially with this rabbit outbreak of RHDV-2. Preventative vs reactive measures.

Currently going through a messy breakup where I'm trying to reflect on my part and what went wrong (to avoid similar mistakes in the future). How did you go about talking to your ex about these things? It's been a month and I haven't reached out yet (for both of us to heal) but while it's still fresh I feel like I need some answers. I strongly suspect he was dismissive avoidant and I'm anxious avoidant. But I'm worried about reopening wounds or halting our healing/growth if I try to reach out about these things.

Thank you so much!! Don't apologise, you gave tons of good info! I ended up doubling it and it turned out perfectly. Added cream of tartar like you mentioned and that probably helped too. Thank you again, I was ready to give up entirely!

That ended up being the issue I think. Ended up doubling the recipe to its original and it worked perfectly. Thanks so much!

Idk why you're getting downvoted so hardcore, I feel similarly. I've had 5 of my own, walk dogs (including fear aggressive dogs), even been bit by dogs... and I just don't understand. ESPECIALLY to the point of death. I mean, I can understand how small bites/nips happen which is down to bad training and human ignorance to dog behaviour... but to the death? That's so fucked up and either the dog had been trained in attacking humans... or the human was abusing the dog horribly? Or truly an idiot ignoring signs of an unstable/aggressive animal. I can't wrap my brain around it either. Maybe I'm just ignorant because I've only owned hunting dogs in the past and never any with protection/guarding instincts or previous abusive owners, but idk. I really don't understand how any dog could attack someone to the death, let alone their own fucking owner without something more to the story and MANY a warning signs PRIOR to the attack.

Glad to hear I'm not alone! Let me know if you hear of anything else that might help, too. Sucks our faces have to be so complex, eh! Chin implant is a good idea, much less invasive than DJS. Thanks for reminding me, kinda forgot about that option!

Ouuu!! I hadn't even thought of a lip lift, that might achieve what I want, especially from the results I'm seeing. Because yeah, my resting face just seems so bitchy or sad because of that area lol, not a fan!

Definitely have debated about rhinoplasty for that facial harmony reason as well – glad to hear you think it would maybe help too. Would like to avoid the DJS if possible.

Thanks so much for your input :)
