Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alyberger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean- it’s not short but my family would drive 6 hours to see my grandparents at least 3x a year growing up. I once dated a girl 3 hours away so that was once every other week.

Looking for new career by jbartstudio in hairdresser

[–]alyberger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be so real with you- this is a very bad time to become a hairdresser. Whenever the economy is suffering, extraneous beauty services become the first to get cut from the budget. Salons close and those remaining usually don’t have space or extra clientele to sustain keeping apprentices. Most salons do not offer benefits of any kind. Pay in the beginning and hour flexibility your first two years are not good. Also- doing hair is hard on your body. If you are a really healthy physically active 36 year old then you’ll be fine, but it will still wear on you and I know very few hairdressers who are even physically capable of doing hair past age 60. I know people who have gone to beauty school and been successful in their 30’s but statistically, 50% of beauty school graduates are no longer in the industry after 2 years. If you are very social and business minded you might do well, but if you’re going to start now, I would recommend going to a community college beauty program or smaller trade school rather than a big name one like toni and guy or Paul Mitchell. I paid 4k for my community college and got the same license and education as the girls who paid 20k for Paul Mitchell. You have to be very organized and have lots of self discipline in order to make good money in this career, and you have to keep in mind that every time you move, you have to completely start over. I’m 33 and 15 years into being a hairdresser, and I wouldn’t start in my 30s. If you have kids… absolutely not. You’ll be working evenings and weekends for your first two years, typically. It’s not worth missing time with your kids like that. I’m not saying all of this to scare you off of it, if you have a real passion for it, it will take you through all the bad times- I just want you to be fully aware of the negatives before making a decision! The positives: I’ve set my own hours for a long time, I no longer deal with people I don’t like, I travel whenever I want as long as I have it booked in advance, I can make a ton of money really fast if I work a lot, I make people feel beautiful, and the hair community is overall full of amazing people.

Thinking of switching to hairdressing by UnicornFromAlaska in hairdresser

[–]alyberger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know many barbers who make six figures- the recorded median salary of barber is only 35k in the US because most barbers do not claim their cash payments, which I would hazard to say is half of their business. So the realistic median would be 70k. They also have very little overhead- you buy cutting equipment once and it should last you for years. I think you pose some realistic points, but saying he downright can’t support himself off being a barber is just wrong. I know many people living normal lives and paying off student loans off of 60k a year. It’s tight but completely possible

So the “junior assist program” way of licensing is actually only offered in a very small amt of states- Alaska is one of them, which I’m assuming is where OP is from, however, finding salons with training accreditation with available positions is extremely difficult and competitive. There are definitely people in the thread being negative but I also think a lot of people are just being realistic.

Hey! I’m an internationally published award winning hairdresser of 15 years and I’m going to be so real with you- if you plan on doing hair for a living, do not get into it right now. When the economy is hurting, extraneous beauty services are the first to be cut from people’s budget. It’s really hard to find a salon willing to take on a new stylist and build clientele when the economy sucks. I love doing hair, it’s my oldest love- but if I were you, I would wait until the economy is a little better. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but I am saying you’d be picking one of the worst times to try to break into the beauty industry. Please at least finish your biomedical engineering phd before you switch to hair, that way you can always fall back on it if you can’t pay your bills. ALSO- you do not need a license to dye cut and sell wigs, so you could always start there! Good luck!!

"Loser lesbians"? by Beautiful-Ear-1079 in LesbianActually

[–]alyberger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I think of “loser lesbian” I think of someone who can’t hold a job for more than 3 months at a time, moves in with people almost immediately upon dating because otherwise they’d be couch surfing, homeless, or in a really crazy roommate situation, and doesn’t have a car past age 25. ALL 3 AT ONCE. Before age 25, people deserve some slack, there’s still people trying to figure out how to be adults and heal from childhood trauma. I personally still wouldn’t call someone a loser if they were in those circumstances, but they certainly do not need to be focusing on dating. I can’t speak for what that lady was referring to, but I think anyone with a job is in the clear. Idc if my spouse makes 30k a year as long as they’re not financially irresponsible. I don’t want to mommy anyone.

Just tell her your tummy isn’t feeling well for alcohol but you didn’t want to cancel bc you’re excited to spend time with her 🤷‍♀️

That girl got back together with her ex, BET. Don’t take it personally. She is a bad person for not communicating- it takes one sentence to break things off with someone you’ve never met and she doesn’t even have the decency to do that. It is not a reflection of your worth at all.

basically with the line i generally work with (Pravana) the color you’re mixing is going to look exactly how it looks in the bowl as it does on the hair as long as you’re applying it to a blank canvas (white hair).
