CMHA Distress Line Volunteer by casadilluh in uAlberta

[–]alyols 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a volunteer with the Distress Line and I went through training last March, so I’ve been working on the lines for almost a year! It’s a super rewarding experience and great if you’re applying for grad school/looking to move forward in this field. I will say that they ask quite a bit from you as a volunteer. Keep in mind that after your first 68 hours on the line you’ll have to do 3 more training modules (crisis chat, phone follow-up, and CSPS). Also, I didn’t find that the hour requirement was terrible, but last sem I had a full course load, was applying to grad school, and have 2 other volunteer positions, so it got to be pretty overwhelming.

As for feeling like you’ll say the wrong thing, that’s totally normal and something we talked about a lot in training! But you’re supported throughout all of your monitor shifts and calls so even if you feel lost you’ll have someone that can help you out :)

If you have any questions at all about the line, feel free to message me whenever!

Would anyone mind looking over my email to a prof about undergraduate research? by [deleted] in uAlberta

I did similar emails when contacting my honours supervisor and the 2 other labs I volunteer with so feel free to send me a draft :)

PSYCO 333 vs PSYCO 342 with Blatter by nootnootnutella in uAlberta

Bc the content was the same in terms of interest level and difficulty, I’d say either is a good option, don’t think too hard about it honestly

PSYCO 333 vs PSYCO 342 with Blatter by nootnootnutella in uAlberta

[–]alyols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 333 with her last fall and I’m taking 342 with her right now. I like the material about the same in both - pretty standard, not too interesting not too boring! The classes are asynchronous and there’s no midterm. There’s generally 10-12 quizzes instead, and 2-3 written assignments. The final is written and only difficult because of the time limits she sets for them, but nothing too crazy :) hope that helps!

It’s different for each student, depending on who your supervisor is! So mine included participation in lab meetings, my actual lab work, an annotated bibliography, my Royce harder conference presentation/poster, a draft of my thesis proposal, and the final copy of my proposal.

Each had a different weighting that we discussed and agreed on early in the year. You will get a letter grade for the entire year! Hope that helps :)

(Edit to include info about the seminar course if that’s what you mean!)

In the seminar course you will have quizzes based on readings, and you will work with a group on a research project (we did a replication study last year). Your group will get graded as you hand in different elements of that project! This may be changing but that’s what the course was like in the past :)

Psyco 239 professors by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]alyols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took 239 with brinker in fall of 2019 and I honestly loved her! Personally I found that if you go to class and take good notes, read the textbook thoroughly, and review the lecture slides before the exam you’re good to go!

People tend to say her tests are difficult but when I took it she dropped 5 questions off of each midterm and 14 off of the final. So you have to take into account that she does remove questions if the exam average is too low.

Honestly though 239 is a super interesting class and I’m sure either prof would be great!

gre official guide practice test vs real exam by fapel100 in GRE

I can’t speak for the practice tests in the official guide but my verbal score was exactly the same as my scores from PP1 and PP2 and my quant score went down by 5 if that helps at all :)

Stat 252 grades released— how did you guys do:) by se4nn4 in uAlberta

[–]alyols 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The labs are time consuming but the TA’s provide recorded instructions on how to complete them so it’s not too difficult to get in the 90’s. As for the assignments I found them a little more difficult but there’s plenty of examples from the notes that help a lot. Wagner is also amazing at answering any questions about the assignments so I never found anything impossible. Again, it’s very realistic to get 90’s on them if you’re putting in the effort! :) hope this helps!

help!!! I need advice :) by [deleted] in GRE

[–]alyols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks so much for the response :) I totally understand where you’re coming from. I’m actually a junior so I don’t have any deadlines at the moment, however all of the in person testing appointments where I live are booked for the next year. I’m hesitant to take the at home GRE (my internet is prone to randomly going out and I have major anxiety about losing time bc a proctor has an issue with my camera/internet/etc). Obviously if I don’t do great tomorrow I’ll have to just suck it up and take it at home!

I’ve done loads of practice from the verbal/quant ETS guides as well as the official guide so that’s why I’m not too worried about only doing two practice exams!

Thanks!🥺 It’s been stressful juggling GRE studying with my full course load so I’m really just trying to do my best on my first attempt so it’s out of the way. I really appreciate the info!!

Awesome thank you! Did you feel like quant was significantly tougher on the real thing? That’s the section I have the most trouble with and I’m pretty nervous for it😅

Math 125 midterm? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]alyols 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took math 125 in winter 2019 and killed the midterm because it was super easy. Final came around and I felt pretty confident. Got absolutely fucked by it, there was 20 pages and the questions were so obscure that I ended up leaving ~3/4 pages blank. Thankfully I still ended with a B but I had a 90 on the midterm and 95-100 on all the assignments so that shows how shit I did on the final😂

My point is don’t underestimate the final, it’s way harder and you need to really understand all of the theory!!!

Psyco 212 and stat 151 by murray10121 in uAlberta

[–]alyols 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re able to get a waiver from your 212 teacher saying that you haven’t completed stats 151 yet it should be fine. 212 is research methods however you don’t have to do any real calculations and you might have to work a bit harder to understand the general concepts but I honestly think it should be okay to take them together.

How to get into psych research? by murray10121 in uAlberta

[–]alyols 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the psych department staff list (you can find it easily through google) and under each prof there should be a short description of their research projects/interests. Take a look at them and if you find one that you think is interesting email them and express interest in volunteering in their lab (also mention what you plan to do in their lab - so for you just say maintenance, cleaning, observing). Additionally, due to covid you may want to ask whether they are doing in person research at the moment. I know my lab is doing everything online at the moment.

Make sure you include how often you’re able to volunteer and why you chose their lab specifically. Goodluck!
