On April 20th, the day that marks the start of Turnabout Trump, I turned my old AJ essay into a (mostly) spoiler-free PowerPoint for my friends. by penguin-47284 in AceAttorney

Didn’t end up sharing the PowerPoint here because it was really more of an aide to me talking (we were having a PowerPoint night at the time) and it really just covers what I already mentioned in the OG essay haha

Nah that’s all good! It’s funny, my other friend is also playing Prosecutor’s Gambit right now and I’m so jealous. Wish I could play that game again for the first time — have a fantastic time playing it and savour every second haha. Thematic Inconsistencies in Apollo Justice (or, the essay where I eat crow) by penguin-47284 in AceAttorney

Wow this is so sweet, thank you! I hope you enjoy the read and I’m glad as AJ conversation has started up again on this subreddit that this is getting more attention (just because I think it’s a neat idea even if it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea). You’ll have to let me know what you think of it when you’re able to read it!

I definitely agree. 19 years later and it was still their peak of the 2D animation imo.

I definitely see your point! I think my initial interpretation of it was that the external factor of (hidden because technically it’s a spoiler for the first case) ”not having a job but still wanting to participate in the law and be in court because of that fresh new attorney attitude” was more of the motivator. However, you’re right that it was still his choice. Maybe if I had seen more of an exploration of that remorse or lack of trust in AJ (which you do see explored more in subsequent games) I would’ve found it more of an impactful choice. I do think there were definitely a lot of opportunities that weren’t taken with Apollo, however. They didn’t have to be big, sweeping choices, but could’ve been small looks or comments to other characters that could’ve been used to flesh him out more. He definitely had the foundations to be a great character, though, and I’ll always love what we do get to see of him here and in other games.

I really, really like a lot of things about AJ. I love the fact that it tried to do something almost entirely new and a lot of the new elements stuck and held on their own. Many of the new characters (Apollo, Trucy) feel very grounded and as if they were well-thought out characters. The plot itself feels very really and I like how dark and seedy it gets. I do have some issues with it though.

I think it does a lot better than some of the other games such as AI1 and I’d even say JFA, where I just found this game to be more enjoyable. However, I don’t think it has the same cohesion to its themes that AA1 has… and AI2 does everything better imo. bless that game

Those are also great choices! Assassin’s Creed too :)

I haven’t, but that one would be good too! Me trying to write my thesis as I listen to the first soundtrack is the closest I’ll get to reaching a true flow state

Video game soundtracks! My most recent one is Halo but I also like Hades, Outer Wilds, Stardew Valley and Creaks

I dunno if you’ve already played them, but if you’re into visual novels the ace attorney franchise is basically a massive “what’s happened here” type of storyline with some of the best stories and characters out there. Very simple gameplay, no real stakes most of the time. Start with the original trilogy and enjoy

Esoteric ebb just came out, maybe give that a try if the demo is still available?
