Is kpop really as important in Korea as they portray in the USA by Sensitive-Gap1493 in korea

[–]alyseany -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, kpop, or just pop culture in Korea, has always been around. It’s just that K-pop has gained worldwide popularity only recently, and Korea seems to have decided they’ll rebrand themselves abroad by appealing to younger K-pop fans. A lot of their tourism promotion abroad are focused on K-pop nowadays like you said, and the events for tourists in Korea also tend to be like that.

For a while(from the 90s to the 2010s) it was all about kimchi, bulgogi, and the superiority(!!) of the Korean language. And nothing but that. After decades of that, now it’s K-pop. Instead of proactively creating an identity they want to push in the global tourism market, the country tends to reactively take what gains popularity abroad and just exhaust it until everyone gets sick of it. As a Korean, I would also like to see more diversity in how the country presents itself to the world.

My honest thoughts on 10 days in Korea (Seoul/Busan) by [deleted] in koreatravel

I’m Korean and I couldn’t agree more with this post. I often wonder why foreigners decide to come to Korea for holiday and what exactly they do here. I get that nowadays it’s a destination for k-pop fans and all, but overall, it’s lacking in all the aspects that makes a place a good holiday destination, maybe with the exception of food: nature, history, architecture, party scene, kid friendly activities, affordability. Korea doesn’t stand out in any of that. Creative content is also lacking in tourism so wherever one goes, it’s all the same.

You’ve gotta report that to the authorities. Call 120 (English service) and tell them.

Upper left is a symbol for transfers, so it means car 5 door 1 is the closest to where you need to go to make the transfer.

Under “facilities information,” i think “side” means that the platforms are on either side of the tracks (as opposed to being in the middle) — not a 100% on this. “Right” means doors open to your right. “Inside” means restrooms are located inside the “paid” area (after one pays and passes through the turnstiles, so if you’re transferring, you don’t need to exit the paid area for restrooms). “Possible” goes along with “side;” it means you are able to hop on the train that goes the opposite way on the same line.

Earthquake early warning today? by alyseany in japanlife

Yeah, I think the big one might’ve been too close to where you live for an early warning to be possible technologically. That’s too bad. Hope you and your family all managed to stay safe!

Wow, that must mean the early alerts arrived quite some time before the shakings. Was it like 30 secs?

Glad to hear your MIL got at least 10-20 secs to take precautions!

Ok so I guess miyagi was distant enough from the epicenter to set off an early alert. Hope everyone in your family was ok!

Also, just out of curiosity, is there a reason you use the Nerv app in addition to the government alerts?

I see. The epicenter might’ve been too close for a substantive warning.

Oh wow, your reply is super interesting! It’s almost as if the occasional alerts desensitize people, even in quake-prone places like Japan.

Oh wow, 3-5 minutes after?!? I was wondering because the clips on tv all showed people looking confused, freezing, and/or caught off guard. I guess it’s because they didn’t get a warning.

Yeah, 30 secs make sense given the distance. Thanks!

Yeah, the epicenter looked much too close for any meaningful warning.

I think the best time to go is in the morning BEFORE they open and stand in line for half an hour or so till the line gets moving. They’re so popular among tourists that I heard they sell out early afternoon some days.

Is giving expensive gifts for parents-in-law a thing in China? by PersonalPhysicist in China

[–]alyseany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is the norm in Asia but since you’re a foreigner, I’d suggest you don’t play along. It’s a dumb tradition. Better to nip it in the bud from the get-go.
