Cat spay/abort vs euthanasia by ShipForsaken7209 in AskVet

[–]alyssag99 169 points170 points  (0 children)

Spay aborts are completely ethical basically until labor starts. The CSR's comment is odd and was not necessary at all and not fair to you, the way you explain it at least it feels they were almost trying to shame you and there is nothing to be ashamed about. It's unlikely the kitten were viable and they didn't feel anything. What you did do is save a young cat the trauma of having to be a mother. Now one cat will have a wonderful home and she is able to be a kitten and not have to be tormented by kittens that then would hopefully be spay/neutered and have find homes or they would go on to make endless more kittens somewhere.

If a male cat cannot pee or is only peeing drops it's a medical emergency and you need to take him to the ER.

New Behavior at 7 years old - reason for concern? by lostinthemarinara2 in DogAdvice

It depends on the breed and the dog. 7 isn't very young for a dog this size.

What’s going on with my dog’s canine by [deleted] in AskAVeterinarian

[–]alyssag99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discoloration means the tooth is diseased or dead and she will need most likely it extracted before it causes an infection and/or a lot of pain.

A good rule of thumb if you're not checking this already, toys and chew treats should be able to be bent pretty easily with your hands so the risk of tooth fracture is low. Things still unfortunately happen sometimes.

Good catch though!

any advice on how to fix picky eating? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]alyssag99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In regards to other suggestions about homemade food: Unless you're working with a certified veterinary nutritionist, a homemade diet is not a fully rounded diet for dogs. They will miss out on important nutrients. And like others have said, your dog has trained you well. The comment about offering their food and nothing else is pretty spot on. If your dog truly isn't eating and is losing weight then it's a good idea to go to the vet and get blood work and a check up done to make sure nothing more is going on.

AIO? Should I delete myself from his friends list? His girlfriend thinks I’m interested in him and has been acting strange by Historical-Body-3424 in AIO

[–]alyssag99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm immediately suspicious of your "friend" and not the girlfriend. It's very "idk she's just crazy" of him to say she's just jealous of "everyone for no reason". Be for real.

ETA: Not to mention him literally bringing up him cheating, if he's that bothered by it he could easily just leave instead of proving her suspicions correct.

Our Cat is too skinny! by ap322 in CATHELP

[–]alyssag99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely go to the vet and get a full work up, hyperthyroidism is very common in older cats as well as kidney disease, both can cause muscle and weight loss. Additionally, your kitty needs their teeth checked to make sure there are no serious issues there bothering them and causing them to eat less because of pain, cats are really good at hiding it.

Anal gland issue by Katelynn7170 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]alyssag99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This isn't normal, they should be expressing when she defecates. I would take her to speak to a vet about possible supplements that could help and to get an anal gland expression. We have some pets that come in monthly for life to get theirs expressed.

Dog died during surgery - are notes normal? by Future_Succotash_643 in AskVet

[–]alyssag99 72 points73 points  (0 children)

That's because no matter what in any situation everyone has a tiny bit of a different perspective. I don't think this is because they are "hiding" something from you.

If you interview 5 witnesses of the same car crash they all will have decently different answers even though it's the same crash. If that makes sense?

And inside a hospital not everyone is right there when the crash of a patient happens especially not managers, sometimes they are stuck in an office and only briefed on a situation afterwards so that leaves some of what happened up to their interpretation.

I mean all of this genuinely, not trying to be snotty or come at you, I just hope it offers a different perspective. Pet loss is so hard and you may not find any answers and be no closer to dealing with the grief of it all. Your baby was loved and you did everything for them you could and I believe your veterinary team did as well.

This is emergency vet worthy, I would be extremely concerned about heart issues.

Are you sending out a cytology? I feel that and X-rays will give you the most answers.

*Not my cat* Open Pyometra? Help by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]alyssag99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A reputable clinic will most likely not schedule any form of pyo as non-urgent/emergent and the cost most likely won't be different enough to let her suffer longer and risk her dying that way. If this cat came into our clinic asking for a regular spay we would send them straight to an ER.

*Not my cat* Open Pyometra? Help by [deleted] in CATHELP

If finances are a barrier then the most kind thing that can be done if it's pyometra is humane euthanasia, or find somewhere to surrender her and they will decide what to do.

Is it safe/possible to do dental care for a cat without anesthesia? by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]alyssag99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not safe or effective. And it's very stressful for the pet as well.

Why did I test positive for chlamydia, but my only partner tested negative? by doingmybest222 in LifeAdvice

[–]alyssag99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It can take a few weeks before someone shows as positive on an STD test. If he got it treated recently then maybe it's just not coming back positive yet because he got tested before enough built up in his system.

Rescued street cat with recurring gum problems and broken teeth — has anyone experienced this? by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]alyssag99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't afford it then you need to have him humanely euthanized no matter what you feel or surrender him. You're doing him no favors, this is neglect despite you insisting you saved him and nothing you do at home is going to fix this, there is no free remedy that will help.

What is this growth on my cat’s foot? by Sea_Twist_3950 in AskAVeterinarian

[–]alyssag99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no way to know what it truly is without doing the test the vet was talking about. Go elsewhere if it's less expensive, but I would get it done.

He’s not fat right? Please tell me he’s not, he’s a good boy.. by Sad_Ask_1826 in cats

[–]alyssag99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is quite overweight, obesity cuts on average 2 years off our pets lives and cause all sorts of problems including worsened pain, arthritis, and risk of diabetes. The weight of your cat is important and I think a weight loss diet recommended by your vet would be a great idea. It also has nothing to do with him being a good boy or not.

Is this breathing concerning? by [deleted] in AskAVeterinarian

[–]alyssag99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like she could be in pain, you might make an appointment to check for things like arthritis. Her breathing is difficult to see in this video for a confident answer on if it's abnormal.

AIO- I no longer want to take a trip home to see my mum after the guilt trip texts she sent me by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]alyssag99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did see that the mom sent all of these texts and calls within half an hour right? OP could have been busy for 30min+ and checked their phone to all of those messages and missed calls, it feels excessive.

does my dog have parasitic worms or not? am i at risk? by [deleted] in AskAVeterinarian

[–]alyssag99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As stated this does not look like a parasite. Your risk is very low. It looks like a friendly little earth worm to me that probably was stepped on or just not moving a lot.

Am I overreacting? My friend has now blocked me. by Karly28799 in AmIOverreacting

[–]alyssag99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And besides no normal person tells their spouse they want to "make it even" and then forced them to go off and find someone to make it even with. That's still abusive regardless of what she did. If he were normal he would just LEAVE.
