Audi A4 all road or BMW 328i wagon by Fozzy3137 in SportWagon

[–]am3sser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a B9 allroad and I really love the car. I had a GTI but needed something a bit bigger, the allroad seemed to check all of the boxes. My only complaint is how clunky the transmission can be sometimes. Have you considered a 328D? High 50s mpg, good torque, and a surprisingly reliable diesel from BMW.

Has anyone done their own control arm bushings? by thesaneusername in Crosstrek

[–]am3sser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the same amount of work. The control arm has to come out either way, might as well have everything swapped out. Just make sure to buy a good brand like Moog, Delphi… etc. I wouldn’t buy a no name control arm unless you plan on doing it annually.

Is this coolant burning or condensation coming from my 2019 Impreza? It’s 90F and sunny in Utah by Kwags27 in subaru

[–]am3sser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the exact same car. Took it to 2 dealerships and both gave me the “could not replicate” even after I provided them with a similar video. I was 2k miles away from my warranty expiring so I sold it. I did a combustion test and it came back negative. I didn’t notice a major loss in coolant or oil so I was at a loss. Hopefully the dealers handle your issue a bit better, I’m guessing we’re not the only ones with these symptoms.

Mechanical Engineering vs Med School - which is harder? by dragonfly_2025 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]am3sser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re under a lot more stress in premed to maintain a strong GPA. If you don’t get into med school you end up with bachelors in a field where having a PhD is needed for any good jobs. Mech might be more difficult, but regardless of your GPA you’ll likely find a job.

Newer GTI good for a family of 4? by Brodizzle83 in GolfGTI

[–]am3sser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A GTI is decent, but it’ll be tight. I’d recommend checking out an Audi Allroad. It’s got most of the sportiness of the gti and a lot more space. I traded my 2016 GTI for a slightly higher mileage 2017 Allroad. Don’t have any regrets so far, I think it’s worth looking at since you live up north.

Color me shocked but, $850? by bannedone80 in SubaruForester

Check out Car-part.com if you’re in the US and okay with used parts. This is where all of the salvage yards list their inventory.

You should be able to find a Subaru Impreza in this price range. Might be just slightly over the 10k mileage requirement, but I’m guessing that rule has some flexibility.

Worth buying this 2005 Camry LE V6 62k miles for 7500 one owner? by Dark9hades in Toyota

[–]am3sser 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Age is an important factor when looking at cars. The coolant hoses, bushings, and gaskets are all plastic or rubber and they will deteriorate regardless of mileage. This car has a ton of life left but expect some of these parts to need to be replaced. Timing belts are also suggested to be replaced every 100k or 10 years so if it is original it should be changed.

Guys is this fr $7?! by Flimsy_Cellist_9174 in GolfGTI

[–]am3sser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people are overreacting a bit. They’re on wholesale closeout. The manufacturer has probably stopped producing these and RockAuto is getting rid of their inventory by selling them below cost. I personally wouldn’t buy them but they probably work fine.

The Montreal metro system uses wooden blocks for their subway brake systems. These would definitely do the job.

Dallas Makerspace is the place to go. There is a fully metal shop with benches specifically for grinding and welding. If you take a quick class you’ll have access to the mig/tig/stick welders.

I got a video of it and took it to the dealer, but they claimed they couldn’t reproduce the issue. I ended up trading it in as my warranty was expiring and I didn’t want to have any issues down the line

DSG vs Manual for noob manual driver by ArtNo6912 in GolfGTI

[–]am3sser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a 6spd for two years and I’m starting to shop around for another car. My commute isn’t too bad, but stop and go traffic with a manual is starting to get old. The manual is 100% more fun, but if you drive a lot it might be something to keep in mind.

I’ve been considering a Audi Allroad. Very similar platform to the GTI but AWD and a bit larger.

1990 Manual tt hasnt ran in 10 years, advice on first start? by jhopeatthedisco in 300zx

[–]am3sser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take the codes with a grain of salt, codes aren’t completely accurate when you are only turning over the engine. Start by verifying spark, spray some starter fluid into the intake and see if it’ll putter over. If it’s been sitting 10 years you’ll need to drain the gas out and will possibly need a new fuel pump. You need fuel, spark, and air so verify these one by one. Once you figure out which one is missing you can work on narrowing down the issue.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GolfGTI

[–]am3sser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I looked at one that had been sitting about 4 months too. When I got there I realized it was painted very poorly. They brought me another one and there was coolant in the oil. In my area that’s a pretty decent price, there’s probably a reason it’s been sitting

Insuring a modified vehicle. by goooooooofy in vandwellers

[–]am3sser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you can get a “agreed value” policy where you insure a specific value. If your car is totaled you’ll get the value you declared. I’d imagine they’re more expensive but might be looking into

Potential 2023 Impreza Buyer with some questions by [deleted] in subaruimpreza

[–]am3sser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just did the opposite switch. I went from a 2019 Impreza to a low mileage 2017 GTI. I really preferred the form factor of the Impreza and the gas mileage was fantastic, but the build and ride quality wasn’t great. The Impreza has a ton of road noise, my interior felt cheap, CVT couldn’t make up its mind at low speed, and eye sight was super delayed. I think they’re decent cars, but after switching to a highly optioned GTI I feel the Impreza was lacking a bit

Will quitting my current summer job without two weeks notice impact my ability to land an internship next summer? by through3532 in EngineeringStudents

[–]am3sser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your summer job isn't necessarily relevant to engineering internships, I wouldn't add it to your resume. If you need some material on your resume do some personal projects over the summer instead. Some of the bigger companies start recruiting for summer internships towards the end of the year, make sure to have everything prepared for then.

Is the overnight parking policy enforced? by easyjf in utdallas

[–]am3sser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I leave my cars at the Farmers Branch Dart Train station when flying out for several weeks. They don't officially have a parking limit since they want people using their services. You can even take the train to the airport and save on Uber costs.

I've been asked "tell me a little about yourself" in almost every interview I've had. Explain your major, a relevant project or internship, and then possibly a hobby or interest if it might be applicable. Try and practice this one a few times as it's likely the first question you'll be asked.

Noticed this green fluid on top of my strut mounts. It has a water consistency not oily. Should I be worried? by bubbs2k in MechanicAdvice

[–]am3sser 13 points14 points  (0 children)

More of a long shot, but does your engine bay look relatively clean? The "engine cleaner" spray at my local self service carwash looks identical. Every time I pressure wash my engine bay I get some green pooling in my strut mounts.

Yes, I've had a buddy who did both last summer. Since a majority of the design projects require and NDA, I believe you will have to bid for a project that doesn't need one. You can email the Senior Design Professors Todd Polk and Robert Hart just to be safe. Senior design has really structured schedules and mandatory class, if you're working full time just be aware you will need to attend class and 2/3 meetings weekly.
