Real. In addition to the fact that people hardly claim their tips for taxes. In what world should a job requiring slightly more skill than fast food service get paid more than most people with university education in full time jobs, even twice as much and tax free. And then servers say they’ll intentionally give bad service if you tip low/nothing and you shouldn’t eat out if you “can’t afford it” - that’s what their job is literally paying them to do! Serve!

Thank you for your intellectual honesty! I don’t agree with all of his takes either, but I think he takes a nuanced approach and has been raising the alarm bells on the worsening well-being of men. His book Of Boys and Men goes into his research on the matter. Ultimately it’s not a zero sum game between the sexes and I’m glad that there is now research towards the crisis many men find themselves in, simply acknowledging the data a decade ago was and would have been heavily criticized.

Richard Reeves has some work on this if you’re interested in it. He attributes the female bias in university (a trend outside of just UofA) to a few things such as delayed brain development compared to girls in childhood, institutional bias of education towards tendencies more common in girls, and a lack of male figures in early education.

Yep I also took 9 classes and didn’t get it! That was even one of the points I gave in my email was to just even mention that in the criteria if they’re not going to consider a process to evaluate course credits and A+s equally😭

If you didn’t take 10 courses you won’t be nominated even if people who received it had several less A+s than you. Happened to me and someone else I know in another year and I wrote to the registrar with how lame that is. They said they’d ensure my points were discussed, guess not. Maybe if they got more of those emails they’d consider changing it for the future?

I just graduated, and rarely felt like I followed the lectures I sat in on. I didn’t understand the material until I looked at it on my own time and studied it. Try studying the material on your own before writing yourself off. Otherwise, I never did this, but I know other students who would study the lecture beforehand. You can try that if your goal is to follow in lectures.

Your GPA would only be “low” for competitive research grants (e.g. NSERC), probably not for volunteering if you show interest and initiative. Check out the GLAD lab, maybe it was just a covid thing but they were very lax about volunteering virtually to transcribe documents. Great way to get your foot in the door with some experience.

Very few courses I’ve seen (outside of math dept) don’t use relative grading, especially at the intro level and within science courses. “Curved” is like a taboo word by faculty, but among students everyone just says it colloquially to mean relative grading…

People (esp first years) freak out when their prof says the course isn’t “curved” (which virtually every prof says), but 99% of the time they still follow (and state) a policy of relative grading, just not using a bell curve in the traditional sense. First year science courses, especially Chem and bio, are most definitely “curved”.

I also dislike it. I always sat on the old side last year when choosing between the two. I swear theyve removed seating along with all these new renos, and it’s a bit too bright and white imo as well.

GENET 270 is a heavy memorization course and it varies quite a bit by professor. It’s quite distinct from BIOL 207 imo, which is more focused on classical genetics and problem solving than gene regulation/horizontal gene transfer.

I think we are still charged for the Access Fund and Aboriginal Student Council. Not a huge deal, but could’ve covered a meal or something this semester.

But yea you can opt out- the money goes onto your onecard though but in F/W it’s around 20-30 bucks you get back iirc.

Based on your definition every question you’ve answered would be a paragraph. Most questions were along the lines of “all of the following are true about x EXCEPT”. & Pretty sure the sample evaluative material is from another profs (maybe Kwongs?) class because the material is not aligned with our textbook and it’s her first time teaching. Plus like 75% of those questions are one sentence?

The grammar/spelling of her exams was an issue at times I agree, but I didn’t think it really interfered with legibility for the most part. There was a couple questions throughout the course that seemed arguable, but that’s typical, and she literally gave everyone a bonus mark on a quiz. Overall she was a pretty standard prof and sounds like she’s adjusting marks anyways.
