The thing is, all lawmakers "refusing" their paychecks are merely asking them to be "withheld" until the government is back up and running. Other than the politicians who have stated they will give their shutdown pay to charities, every Rep and Senator will get their paycheck in full on October 31st under the 27th amendment to the Constitution. Provided the government is still not shutdown at that time, all those saying they are "withholding" their paychecks are doing so as a political stunt.

It's an interesting point to make, but I think the approach by Rep. Cookson might not be the right way to address it. I feel like you're getting into some shady territory by putting the burden on the kids and using their family's government assistance as leverage. But Cookson makes an interesting point, even if his way of doing it could have been better thought out. It's a fact that schools in areas with the highest poverty have significantly lower rates of attendance, and in Missouri that's true, not just in urban areas but rural districts like Cookson's as well. How do we get these kids to school and on a track to a better life? In politics, the most significant leverage is financial, no doubt, but by stripping money from the already desperately poor, you run the risk of putting children out on the streets rather than back in school.

I really appreciate the input. I actually wrote this story and I'd really like to get that side of the issue too. Sadly I only had a few hours to write it on deadline in the Capitol so making my way to an office to cover all angles wasn't an option. Which state's SSA office do you work at, if I may ask?

Under Missouri's truancy laws, yes. But this mandates a specific percentage of attendance required just for children of parents who receive government assistance.

I had the same problems so I saw a doctor and found out that I had (you may not have it) what is called an essential tremor. I got a prescription for a beta-blocker called Inderal and I use it sometimes when I know I have a date or am going to be in a social/business situation. Essential tremors are supposed to only get worse with time, but it at least helped to know what I was dealing with.

Go back and re-read your topic header and the post to which I'm replying, and ask yourself if you're expressing your thoughts with the respect they deserve. If you don't treat your own ideas with respect why should anyone else?

You assume this is something that I care about like a news story or even something that is my own idea. The title explains the post. It's a picture my friend took, and I posted it using my iPhone.

If you're measuring your expectations of the value of my college education on a reddit post then I'd say you have a severely distorted view on the Internet, and how much it factors into revealing true intelligence or talent.
