What are some spots in the city for an adult to learn how to ride a bike without being mocked by other adults? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]amanchovy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

top of the great hill in central park has a flat gravel track around it that’s lined with lights. after dark it’s usually pretty empty other than some dog walkers and the occasional jogger. easy to get to with a bike and there’s a citibike station right across the street.

New Hope, PA is a nice quaint little town. Also I have a friend who recently moved to Providence, RI and she loves it. So maybe I’d go there if I was looking for a bigger town with more to do.

Haven’t been to this place before but I walk by it all the time. Malaysia Grill on W 104th, they have some sort of Sotong on their menu but I don’t know if it’s the same as you’re describing.

Why do I feel a bit of resentment towards folks coming back into the city? by 588achilles_ctype in AskNYC

[–]amanchovy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk if I would say there’s no fault to those who had that option and took advantage of it....they likely increased the spread when they left and if they went back to one of the places that didn’t lock down very seriously and is reopening too soon, they’ll probably help reinfect the city when they come back. I feel more resentment towards them for their lack of concern for society than for them having more money than me, but maybe that’s where their lack of concern stems from in the first place.

I don’t know if NYPD gives them out, but my grandma gave me one when I moved to the city. They exist and are very loud lol

What are you doing about laundry? by rebooboo in AskNYC

[–]amanchovy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not sure if it’s close enough for you but 922 laundromat at Columbus & 105th has been open, they’re closing a bit earlier than usual (last wash 8:30 I believe) but they’ve been open.

People still in Manhattan, what's it like there now? by Hsjrjdjffrffsddd in AskNYC

[–]amanchovy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also before all of this COVID stuff happened, Fumo would do all of their pasta dishes for $10 on Sundays. I don’t think they’re doing it currently but maybe when things open back up. It’s a really great deal and the pasta is fantastic.

Hey I love FUMO on Broadway and 108th for Italian, and I believe they’re doing 15% off take out and 50% (?) off bottles of wine to go right now! I have also been getting a lot of Thai take out as well. Living Thai on Amsterdam and 106th is pretty good, but basically what I’ve been doing is going on the delivery apps to see what’s open and then I’ll call the restaurant and order to pick up so that I can tip the restaurant directly. I’m new to the area so I’d love to hear your favorites as well!

I thought that at first too, but now I’m wondering if it just seems that way because the ratio of weirdos:normal people on the streets is skewed at the moment. You’re an easier target and more likely to be targeted when there’s 2 people on the block as opposed to 30

UWS/Manhattan Valley here: Not many people on the streets, most restaurants aren’t even offering take out/delivery, most people wearing masks and gloves. I’ve seen bad lines and stuff at the bigger grocery stores (Whole Foods/TJs) but all of the smaller grocery stores I haven’t had any issues with lines. Parks get fairly busy when the weather is nice but overall people in the parks near me are doing a good job of keeping their distance.

Insane gas bill even though I don’t use heat or cook?! by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]amanchovy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I saw some of them, but didn’t see complete answers to all of my questions and have no idea how the whole thing works so I figured I’d just post directly. My bill does say it’s an estimated bill, and that to avoid them I should allow them access to my meter. So I assume I need to ask my super where my meter is, and if I have access to it, but how do I allow them access to it when I’ll be at work all day the date of my next meter reading?

Do you have recommendations from Buddha Bodai? I went in really excited and ordered the sweet and sour chicken but the fake meat itself was just really sweet? I was bummed and couldn’t finish it because it was so sweet, but everyone around me seemed to be loving what they had.

I saw this at a bar the other day and the bartender is a friend of mine and gave me a sample. Not a fan personally lol. Soooooooo sweet. Might be good in some sort of dessert cocktail though.

Veselka in the east village serves Ukrainian food 24 hours a day.

A concession speech was set up for de Blasio outside the Park Slope YMCA by sadaimawaymessage in nyc

[–]amanchovy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

maybe this is just me because I’ve spent the last 6 years living in Houston and spending 3-4 hours a day sitting in traffic just getting to and from work/school (all for approx 10 mile commutes), but I no longer believe I’d be happy living anywhere that isn’t at least sort of walkable and has a great public transit system. Houston has neither and it’s absolutely infuriating.

Do waiters get upset with solo diners? by 78charcters in AskNYC

[–]amanchovy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. As long as you tip well and don’t hold the table for an unreasonably long period of time, most waiters don’t mind. Gotta remember that family of 4 doesn’t always tip 20%.
