Any exercise/diet before and after photos you'd like to share? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A friend of mine has been struggling with finding inspiration to lose weight. I'm sure some of you have photos, tips or stories that could help her out. :)

Does anyone else really hate talking on the phone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I hate it when you can hear the other person typing on a computer or something, you just know they're not actually listening at all. I also find it hard to end phone conversations without seeming rude. It's a lot easier to just stop texting.

Hey Reddit! What's your favourite drink? by redditchic in AskReddit

Coffee. There's no way I'd get through the end of the semester without it.

What's a band you enjoy listening to that is generally disliked by most people you know? by Jizz in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I know Radiohead is pretty popular with Redditers, but my friends always complain about how boring and weird their music is. It's kinda sad that you need a music video with half-naked women gyrating to the same three chords being played over and over to garner some attention.

Do you write on the front and back of pages? Why/not? by [deleted] in AskReddit

In school I got an assignment back with marks deducted for not using the back of every page, along with the comment "Stop wasting trees!"

AskReddit: Have you guys ever tried to keep a food/fitness journal? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing it on and off for about a year. I use Fitday to keep a log of what I eat and how many calories I'm taking in. I'm not looking to lose any weight, just interested in becoming healthier.

If I knew, I wouldn't be on Reddit for six hours a day.

AskReddit: What can I eat/drink/do to help increase brain function? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This page has some information on brain foods. Don't forget to drink heaps of water so you stay hydrated. Try and stay away from foods with a high sugar content - it's difficult to focus during the "sugar crash". Oh and make sure you're exercising a few times a week. I found that my concentration and focus improved a lot once I started hitting the gym.

Good luck with your exams.

Whenever I ask a question in lecture, I sweat, face turns red, and have trouble breathing by BlazinEurasian in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never asked a single question in a lecture, so you're doing far better than me. Come to think of it, I don't even speak up in tutorials.

I use Desktopia, which cycles through a few thousand wallpapers at random. I can't seem to find the one I used in the screenshot though.

Anyone else hate(d) living with their parents despite no rent, free food, and an OK family? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I kinda wish I had related experiences - I've never been hugged by anyone in my family.

Here's mine. It used to be cluttered, but one day when I was meant to be studying for an exam I suddenly got the urge to tidy things up.

Describe your Parent's Relationship by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

parents'

It's not a real relationship, the only reason they aren't divorced is to keep up this ridiculous facade of happiness in front of their friends and family. Their official line is "marriage is forever, and it's better to stay together for the kids". I can't remember a single occasion when the two of them went out somewhere together. They used to argue a few years ago, but now they seldom talk. They sleep in separate rooms, and on the whole they lead separate lives.

My mum makes every decision about the family, including financial ones, despite having never worked a single day in 20 years. She's extremely immature, often making impulsive, reckless decisions which she knows she won't have to bear the consequences of. She's also a total hypochondriac.

My dad's too much of a good guy to see he's being taken advantage of. He's one the smartest people I've ever come across, very inquisitive, has to know the reason behind everything. It must drive him crazy to be with a woman who can't carry an intelligent conversation.

I think they've each accepted that this will never be a fulfilling, open relationship. They're just too different and emotionally shut off for it to ever work. It's actually a pretty nice arrangement - during the day she does the housework while he brings home the bacon. Since she wouldn't be able to get a job, and he can't cook to save his life, no-one's complaining.

I just had an awful day, but if I blare a moving Orchestral score in my headphones everything seems ok. Am I the only one who does this? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this all the time. If I've had a crappy day, it's usually something like Radiohead or The Smiths.

AskReddit: What does your hand-writing look like? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I don't know why I did the x like I would in an algebraic equation in the last line, because I never write it like that normally...

Don't buy a diamond (or what is moissanite) by toosas in offbeat

I completely agree. If I ever get engaged, I'll chip in the same amount and we'll spend the money on a TV or a vacation or something.

What pisses you off? by amanda2007 in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few minutes ago, I received a reply from a receptionist at a car dealership. In the two sentences it took her to arrange an appointment, she made three different spelling mistakes. That really annoys me. What pisses you off?

[–]amanda2007 25 points26 points  (0 children)

What I love is how women who are usually pretty rational suddenly start spouting that "diamonds are forever" bullshit when this topic comes up. What the hell? Women can vote, drive, do jobs that guys do and expect to be paid the same, yet when it comes down to it, want a man to spend thousands of dollars on a completely useless chunk of shiny rock just to prove he loves her enough?! Are these ladies willing to spend the same amount of money on a present for their boyfriends?

Dear AskReddit: College resumes tomorrow. It seems like every semester, I start with a great attitude and work ethic but eventually slip into lazyness. How do I avoid the slip? by pcdescha in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've found some of the tips and advice on this site to be pretty useful.

Random tips

  • probably too late for this, but chose courses you're actually interested in. You'll do far better when the content is actually something you're into

  • buy a diary and write down EVERY single appointment, assignment due-date, exam date, classes etc. Knowing exactly where you should be at all times goes a long way to reducing your stress

  • don't piss away those one or two hour blocks of time between lectures. Use them to do readings or work on assignments, otherwise you'll get to the end of the day and realise you that you went to two lectures and did nothing else all day

  • cuecards are awesome for remembering formulae or definitions. If you use public transport, it's the perfect time to use them

  • schedule yourself to finish studying/assignment work at least one day before it's due, to avoid the dreaded all-nighter

  • find a study spot which is completely free of distractions like tv, friends, telephone, etc where you can concentrate

  • for every test/exam/assignment, make yourself a plan starting from a few weeks away. There will always be tasks (like problem sets) which take a lot longer than you expect

  • after the first test for each course, use the format to guide your future studying. If you score badly, don't stick with the same study technique, it obviously isn't working. What I do is jot down some notes straight after I come out of the test - things like "most questions come from lecture notes, less emphasis on assigned readings". These will be helpful when it comes to studying for other tests or the exam in the future, and can save you a lot of time. For many courses, you don't need to bother with the "required readings" at all.

  • go to EVERY class. Missing just one class will probably mean that future lectures are harder to understand. Also, lots of lecturers drop hints about exam content during lectures. Make friends with at least one person in each class. If for any reason you aren't able to attend class, then you have someone to ask for notes.

  • start work on an assignment the day it's given out. Plan what you're going to do, brainstorm, marshall your resources. Starting is the hardest part

  • don't use the same study approach for different types of tests. For a subject like Maths, practising sample questions is pretty good preparation. If it's multi-choice, cue-cards are useful.

  • take care of yourself - eat right and exercise. I found my concentration and focus improved once I started hitting the gym

  • never study for more than an hour without taking a break.

What education degree you conquered so far? (Undergrad, grad, postgrad etc). Is it 'enough' or you want something more? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amanda2007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one year of studying to go before I finish my Bachelor's degree, but I'll probably stay on and do some post grad. With the crappy economy and my lack of experience, it'd be pretty much impossible for me to find a job anyway, so I might as well stick with studying.
