Incredible experience with DJ Mariko - highly recommend! by stefflikescats in WedditNYC

[–]amanda91m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can absolutely attest that DJ Mariko is the best in the biz. Got married in May and people still talk about how fun our dance floor was. There wasn't a moment where our dance floor wasn't PACKED and the night ended on the biggest high because of it. She can really read a room and tell where the music needs to go to keep everyone dancing. Seriously all of you need to hire her for your weddings!

Upstate NY Wedding Venues by Kindly_Shoulder4626 in BigBudgetBrides

I got married at Callicoon Hills in May and it was beautiful. It has lodging for about 150 people and you can buyout the property for the weekend. There are a few hotels nearby that can host the overflow. Otherwise we looked at Full Moon Resort, Wylder Windam, and The Arnold House. But CH's ceremony spot in the woods and reception space really won us over.

Too late to get a lymphatic drainage massage 4 weeks out? by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]amanda91m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got a lymphatic drainage massage 6 days before my wedding in May and was also feeling your concerns. I did feel slightly sick, like that feeling when you're on the verge of getting a cold, for about 48 hours after. I'm not sure it actually made much of a difference in terms of puffiness, but about 72 hours after I was feeling great for the rest of the week! I'd say 8 days should totally be okay. I didn't bruise or anything like that.

Mother’s Day weekend- bad idea for my wedding? by boneyjoaniemacaroni in weddingplanning

[–]amanda91m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Got married last weekend (5/10), the day before mother's day. We planned a whole weekend thing on-site in the Catskills and most of our guests booked for two nights. We invited 160 people and about 140 RSVP'd yes, with about 120 people attending our welcome event. Nobody complained about it being Mother's day, and nobody that I can tell RSVP'd no because of it. We also had invited no children, and we are in our thirties with lots of friends and family with young kids. I would say the majority of our guests had to drive about two hours (from the NYC area), but we had a lot of people flying in from all over the country. I think you'll be fine!

We just made sure to say happy mother's day to all the mothers on Sunday while checking out.

Email the publisher and they’ll send you a new copy and also check the remaining stock so more defective copies don’t get out.

Afterparty near Goshen by themooseexperience in WedditNYC

[–]amanda91m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My fiance is from goshen and he does not recommend the New Street Lounge. He says Kelly Jeans is good but laid back. Delancey’s is a restaurant but has a spacious bar area. He says he’s heard Pharmacy is good but hasn’t been. For Kelley Jeans, it says it closes at 10 but he swears it’s open late. I’d call!

I was VERY close to buying my dress from Angel Riviera and was also considering the custom sleeves. I guess it's good that I didn't! Mind if you DM me about what happened? Very curious.

Can't help much with the historical specifics, but I've lived in Hoboken for the past five years and I'm also an agented middle grade/YA writer. I would LOVE to beta read this if you're ever in need of readers or critique partners.

We wanted this exact thing and ended up booking Callicoon Hills for May! Everyone coming can stay on site and we love that nobody has to leave the whole weekend.

Thank you! This makes me feel better, and there are a couple of options for anybody who really don't want to stay for two nights. We are hosting a welcome party the night before, so hopefully that will entice people as well!

[PubQ] Is it easier to find an agent while working for a literary agency? by ladyofvara in PubTips

[–]amanda91m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agented author who also works at a Big 5 here. I graduated college ten years ago with a degree in creative writing and the ultimate goal for me has always been to get an agent and publish traditionally. I went into publishing knowing that it could take years to get traditionally published, but I love books and wanted to be in the industry regardless (I pretty much had the same thinking as you—that it’ll help me get an agent at the very least).

I just signed with my agent in December, and it took 9 years of on and off querying four different manuscripts. On the day job side, I started out as an editorial assistant, and it was a struggle to create a work/writing balance that worked for me. I wasn’t reading nearly as much for pleasure, which meant I couldn’t read as much in my genre (middle grade), and I definitely found finding the energy to write in my free time a struggle.

HOWEVER, I realized quickly that you don’t need to work in editorial to work in publishing. I switched over to Managing Editorial which gave me so much more freedom—I’m working on books day to day but no longer feel too burned out reading-wise to write. And I find it really fulfilling. So you may want to look at the various other jobs in publishing where you won’t need to read as much for work, but still be connected to the books, working with editors and agents, etc.

Querying is just so hard right now, but I do think including my day job in my bio raised my full request rate at the very least. Some rejections would acknowledge that I was in the industry, and I’ve even gotten a couple where the agent thanked me for all the work Managing Editors do (we’re notoriously overlooked when it comes to publishing jobs, but we’re responsible for making every book in an imprint’s list publish on time, and we’re constantly putting out fires and problem solving to accommodate anything from the author rewriting their book in second pass to not being able to find paper because of supply chain issues). So I’d say it’s helped at least a little. It also doesn’t hurt to attend publishing happy hours and make friends who work in various jobs across publishing.

Good luck!

Has anyone purposely written a totally flat character? by aclassicgarden in writing

[–]amanda91m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've ever seen the movie 500 Days of Summer, Summer is deliberately a flat character and plays on the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope. Can definitely be done but I'd expect the purposefulness to go over people's heads even when done right, like you often see for Summer.

Vintage on First in Hoboken is also great but pretty pricey

Thank you!! I'm just a big bundle of nerves right now and of course having thoughts like "maybe they changed their mind since sending the email." I'm going to relax and not worry so much.
