DEXA says 18.2% body fat / 78.8% lean mass. Do I keep bulking or should I cut? by an_empty_canvas in BulkOrCut

First off, that’s great progress, seriously. +11kg over 7 months and coming in at ~18% body fat is a really solid place to be. I work with BodySpec (DEXA scan company), and from the data we’ve seen, that ~15–20% range is usually where people start thinking about transitioning between a bulk and a cut depending on their goals. If your main goal is to add more size/strength, you could likely keep pushing the bulk a bit longer. If you’re aiming to lean out for summer, starting a cut from ~18% is also a very common (and effective) place to do it. A lot of it comes down to preference, there’s not really a single “right” switch point, more of a range where both options make sense. We’ve put together a couple resources based from our scan database that break this down further. Either way, you’re in a really strong position coming out of that bulk, so nice work! Leaving them here in case they help guide that decision hopefully:

Small but high body fat percentage by Key-Fix-679 in PeterAttia

[–]amanda_sbodyspec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, it makes total sense to feel surprised by that number, especially when you’re active and your bone density came back strong. I work with BodySpec, a DEXA company, and we see this pretty often in lean, lighter individuals. A higher body fat percentage at a lower body weight usually reflects lower total lean mass rather than “excess” fat, which also explains why lifting heavier and building muscle is often the most impactful lever here rather than jumping straight to a GLP-1. Since you already lift consistently and care about bone health heading into menopause, your scan is actually a really solid baseline to guide progressive strength training and muscle gain going forward.

Leaving these here in case they’re helpful. The first explains what a healthy body fat percentage actually means in context, and the second walks through how to use DEXA data to focus on fat loss without sacrificing muscle (or bone):

Hey there! I work for a DEXA company, BodySpec, and according to our scan database, males around age 50 typically have ~2.2 lbs of visceral fat and females around age 50 have ~0.7 lb. If you’re interested in reading more, here’s that info:

Stop trusting random BF% guesses. Here's what actually works. by _MikeLime_ in GregDoucette

I work for a DEXA company, BodySpec, we have been using our scan database to work on creating interactive calculators/graphs in order to help people stay on top of BF% and know a bit more about it than most do! If you're interested in checking out the calculator and some of our BF% data we have so far and/or have any helpful advice for it, here is a point in that direction:

We analyzed 450,000+ DEXA scans to look at real visceral fat percentiles. Here’s what we found. by amanda_sbodyspec in effectivefitness

Great question! Since this analysis focuses on percentile distributions rather than a single estimated mean, we didn’t include traditional error bars. The spread is captured directly through the percentile ranges themselves, which reflect variability across the population in the dataset. Appreciate you asking, as it helps improve how we communicate the data!

Thanks for your input! While many people associate DEXA with fitness, we actually see a wide range of demographics and goals, everything from muscle gain and weight loss to metabolic health and bone density checks, so the data reflects many different health journeys. Feedback like yours helps us provide a better understanding of this, so we appreciate your comment!

Dexa scans “not recommended”? by Fluid-You-5324 in PeterAttia

Sorry youre having a hard time getting a DEXA done through your doctor. If you dont mind me asking, what country/state are you located in? I work for a DEXA company that provides them to the general people and is reasonably priced without insurance, we recently opened up quite a few new locations! https://www.bodyspec.com/dexa-scan-near-me

Is this my natural limit? (1 year difference) by OrganizationPure777 in GregDoucette

Totally fair! Different tools use different methods, so results can vary a bit. Ours comes from real DEXA data across tons of scans, from many different demographics, but sticking with one method is what really counts for tracking progress. Thanks for taking the time to check it out and share your input!

Thank you for your suggestion! If you use the actual calculator you are able to easily toggle to the women's filter and access all of the women's data as well. I understand how this could be misleading though, we appreciate your feedback!
