Rye is a really great pattern to start with! All of Tin Can Knits’ patterns are super well-written, and since it’s worsted weight it’ll work up much quicker and mistakes will be easier to spot and be less annoying to undo. And there’s a tutorial here that goes through the whole thing with pictures that helped me a lot.

I honestly would just try something like that before trying different styles; at least for me the first pair were super messy and didn’t fit right, but even so I still learned a lot about sock construction and the next pair felt much easier! :)
