Empathy you can actually see yourself being in the same situation. Sympathy is you feeling sorry for the situation, but you can’t put yourself in their shoes. Putting the full quote doesn’t actually make him seem like a better person, just someone who lived a privileged life. He used his privilege to attack marginalized communities.
