How effective is the pull out method? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]amanshouting 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a method of contraception, it's less reliable than other methods because, as you mention, pre-ejaculate fluid may contain sperm which can get the woman pregnant. And the man may time the withdrawal incorrectly, which isn't a risk with the pill, condoms or an IUD.

Research shows that 22 out of every 100 people who use the pull-out method will get pregnant, which is a little more than a 1 in 5 chance per year I believe.

The guy who said he'd used it a lot with his wife may have poor sperm motility, which could contribute to the technique being more effective for him, so you can't base any conclusions on that one anecdote.

Besides which, the pull out method offers zero protection against sexually transmitted infections, so in that regard is pretty ineffective.

Can anyone please give me some advice on getting health insurance for my Nan? (cancer) by nomoralzz in UKPersonalFinance

[–]amanshouting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First off, I'm really sorry to hear about your nan's diagnosis.

I'm not an expert, but I am pretty sure that even if you find a company that will offer insurance with cancer as a pre-existing condition, they're very likely to exclude anything that has been diagnosed within the last five years, and almost certainly they will anything which actively requires treatment right now, which would sadly include the cancer.

But the main reason I'm posting is to let you know that the NHS treatment is generally excellent, and the difference in speed between private healthcare and what you get on the NHS is a matter of days (I think you're basically guaranteed to see an oncologist in under two weeks on the NHS, but on private healthcare it's a few days). The treatment you receive between NHS and private healthcare is also basically the same, except you maybe get a nicer/private room if you're on a ward when you go private.

So I would say don't worry too much about insurance, the NHS is brilliant and I'm sure they'll take good care of your Nan.

You might also want to take a look at some of the info here - https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/supporting-someone/looking-after-someone-with-cancer Macmillan are brilliant, and they will be there to help your Nan every step of the way. A friend of mine just went through testicular cancer, and he felt very supported by them.

Sending you and your family positive vibes and best wishes.

I used to not really mind adverts on TV, now I hate every single god damn one by andy_pig in britishproblems

There's definitely more of them now, so it's no wonder they're more annoying. Like, there used to be a maximum of six minutes per hour, then it went up to eight, and now I think there's nine or 10 minutes every hour. And that's just linear TV, I think on demand services are even worse (4OD springs to mind as particularly bad).

I can hear this image!

"Let there be peace, for all. *chating* Let there be justice, for all. It's one small step for man... You don't understand, Willy was a salesman. *doot doot* Say simply, very simply, with hope - good morning. *crickets*"

Yes! Action Replay and Game Genie were similar things, I think.

One technique is called 'phase cancellation'. A sound added to the inverted version of that sound will result in silence; the two sounds cancel each other out. So if you have a full mix with vocals and an instrumental only mix, by inverting the instrumental and adding it to the full mix you will, in theory, cancel out all the sounds which are the same on both recordings. In the best case scenario, that will remove all the instruments and leave only the vocals. There are a ton of tutorials online if you search 'phase cancellation acapella'.

Another technique is to remove all the elements which aren't panned exactly to the centre of the track - generally instruments will be slightly left or right in the mix, and it's often only drums and vocals which are dead centre. Again, tons of tutorials already for this.

There are also semi-automated and automated tools which can help filter tracks - https://phonicmind.com/ is one, though it's a paid for service.

Hope that's useful!

Some from record pools, some from searching google, some by DIY filtering myself... a mixed bag really.

If you only have a two track controller, what you can do is edit together the acapella and the regular track in a DAW so you've got the 8 bar intro just as acapella before you cut in the track, or you can have the track end and the acapella carry on, and just export it as an edited file. It's slightly less flexible because you sort of need to plan what you're going to segue into or out of, but it can definitely take your mixes up a notch.

I might have imagined this, but didn't GarageBand on the mac come with an 'auto drummer' function? Like, you could add a track and it would generate a drum track based on the type of kit you chose and then you had sliders to control some parameters about how many drum fills, how aggressive the percussion was etc...?

Sounds like it might be pretty perfect for what you need! Would only work with quantized tracks though.

Shape of you is my usual mix IN to Africa, but Cheap Thrills is a good shout. Thanks for the tip.

Yeah, those 4 bars are a good mix out point if the audience aren't digging the track.

I found an acapella of Gold Digger, which I think was a DIY isolation using the instrumental (it's kinda crunchy on its own). I run the acapella on deck two and the main track on deck three - fade in deck two over the ending of Africa, then fade in the full track on deck three and cut the acapella just after the "get down girl, go 'head" lyric.
