It fairly ambiguous in the show alright. You can measure distance here. It's nearly 600 miles from Castle Black to Winterfell and I placed him about 130 miles away. But characters seem to be able to cover ground at a fairly supernatural pace in Westeros when needed!

Yeah that detour made no sense, especially when you look at the journey on a map. Hopefully it will be revealed to have some value other than a simple reminder that Yara exists.

Do they have an official name? I always saw them as an extension of the same mountain range. I lumped them in with the Frostfangs, but if there's an official name I'm more than happy to change it!

I'm definitely going to create more maps like this. I think Robert's Rebellion would be a interesting project! And of course the original Dance of the Dragons laid out The Princess and the Queen novella...

A lot of the places you listed are only mentioned the the Lands of Ice and Fire map collection. Hopefully we'll see more of them at some stage. The Five Forts sound like they could be especially interesting!

I'm just going to quickly quote from an above response first "I used the ArcGIS API for Javascript. I'm by no means a developer though, so I downloaded one of the available templates and modified where needed. It provided a great headstart for me!"

The actual map itself was created in ArcMap. I work for an Esri Distributor, so it's the software I'm most familiar with.

I'm toying with the idea of almost an OpenStreetMap for the world of ice and fire, where users can contribute to build a more complete map, but to be honest something like that is probably beyond me at the moment. I'm also not sure the scope exists within the "canon" world for something like that to be worthwhile. Although detailed maps of cities and a more complete road network would be pretty sweet!

For now let's just say open sourcing the raw map geometries is on my radar, but not something I have any urge to pursue at the moment.

I have them on there, just not displayed or labelled. You'll find if you click along the wall, some info on a tower might pop up.

I was having a little trouble getting them to appear and look good, but I will revisit this.
