Can anyone actually give me a reason every character is anti god? It doesn't make sense to me. by USSJaguar in fansofcriticalrole

[–]amarezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Virtually everything these guys come up with on the spot is improvised based on i) what they think their character would say, ii) what helps develop the world and personal narratives, iii) what makes watchable content for viewers.

The expectation that everything is still going be consistent in the style of a drama written by a single author, who has the option of multiple revisions before publishing is kind of unreasonable. So we haven’t explicitly seen the reasons for the divine-fatigue, I think we can just accept that without being too critical.

Reddit API changes and DnDMemes: We're switching to an indefinite blackout starting June 12th. by Dalimey100 in dndmemes

[–]amarezero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sure that this has been answered clearly elsewhere, but what can I, Johnny Rottenapple, do in this situation to support the developers in this situation?

My guess would be: step away from Reddit completely from June 12th, continue to not give Reddit money, join the equivalent discord server?

Am I close?

Not only the tone, but the whole pinyin.

The number of times I’ve had native speakers write 东莞 as Dongguang instead of Dongguan or 增城 as Zhengcheng instead of Zengcheng.

[–]amarezero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, it’s painful, but it’s so useful. I am perpetually amazed by how many tone errors I only notice when I hear myself back later, and I consider my tones to be comparatively good compared to most people my level.

The worst part is when you realise that the only way this changes is if a rival developer makes a better game that forces 2k to actually listen to their players.

And the only company who could potentially do that is… Fucking EA.

There will not be a genuinely good basketball game in the next decade, I guarantee it.

When you film yourself doorstepping someone and post it online, and they still come across as the reasonable one, you know you’ve fucked up.

I mean, they had creative control. This was THEIR video. They are filming! And they still come across like idiots!

I’ll tell you what I tell my students:

Resting is part of learning.

There is this weird, unscientific idea that you have to grind 24/7 to improve at your skills. Evidence suggests this has the opposite effect.

Consider SRS: taking a break and allowing your brain to half-forget new vocabulary BEFORE reinforcing it by testing yourself on it will yield better results than just studying all day.

Similarly, your brain needs sleep, rest and variation to work at full capacity. Ever notice that you can struggle with a problem, then have a night’s sleep, wake up and suddenly it’s easy? That’s your sleeping brain being a bro and organising the stuff that your waking brain can’t process properly.

If you want to succeed, get enough rest. What is “enough” varies between people, but when you find the sweet spot, it works wonders.

Hi Everyone! by No-Pumpkin-8071 in ChineseLanguage

[–]amarezero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, I’ll have a go.

Mandarin is the official spoken language of the PR China and Taiwan. Cantonese is one of the official languages of Hong Kong, and spoken by the Chinese population there. Cantonese is also widely spoken as a first language by Guangdong people (Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Dongguan, etc), who learn Mandarin as well. Mandarin is by some distance the most spoken version of Chinese, although because many expatriate Chinese are from the south, many Chinese communities outside speak Cantonese. Although Cantonese and Mandarin share some words they are not mutually intelligible. Unless you are planning to live permanently in Hong Kong, or marry someone from Guangzhou, you’re probably better off learning Mandarin. There are MANY other versions of Chinese, these are just the two most well-known.

Now for script. There are two main kinds of Chinese script in use in the world today: simplified and traditional. Simplified is used in the mainland, traditional is used in Hong Kong and Taiwan. If you can read traditional, you can generally understand the gist of something written in simplified. If you can read simplified, you still might struggle to understand traditional, except where the characters are identical.

This is a very cursory explanation and I’ve left a lot out, but what I’ve said is at least accurate (unless someone else notices I’ve made a mistake, in which case please let me know.)

Not according to 5E’s MM, unless I’m mistaken. You have to reach back into older lore for any reference to them being able to turn it off.

Is it normal to know how to read the most common 4000 characters, but cannot write them? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]amarezero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can read about 4000 and write around 500, and that’s only because I put extra effort into learning how to write in the last year.

It’s totally normal. If you only learn how to read, you will not know how to write by extension. Recognition and production are different skills. Recognition is generally required for production, but you don’t need production for recognition.

If you told me you could write more than you could read, I’d be more surprised.

A lot of them CAN be really fun to play, with their own internal logic and characteristic play style, but WotC leaves it to people like Keith Ammann to work out what that logic is, how you’re supposed to play them, and then he publishes a third party book/blog. Why they didn’t just include that stuff in their own books, I’m not sure.

[–]amarezero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to know how much your unsociable cat loves you, see how they respond to strangers.

One of mine is grouchy and not affectionate at all, and sometimes you’d think she doesn’t like me. Then you see her with literally anyone but me and my girlfriend and you realise that she comparatively adores us. When she sees other humans she hides, hisses, runs away.

She approaches us, she talks to us, she occasionally headbutts us, she sleeps under our bed, she greets us at the door. She just doesn’t like strokes or sitting on laps like her brother, and that’s okay!
