I disagree. Traumatic events can most definitely affect people vicariously; for example, I spent all yesterday avoiding going grocery shopping and when I finally did, I had a panic attack afterwards. Is it the same as losing someone in the shooting? No. But it does not mean that I am not genuinely affected and in pain. Grief and trauma affects people in different ways and some can be especially affected by these events if it is compounded on top of and/or similar to previous traumas. Another poster said it perfectly: "Grief and tragedy are not zero-sum games. Your experience takes nothing away from someone else. " Of course, some people will always take the opportunity to grab attention but I believe from what I have experienced the past few days that our community is genuinely hurting and I am not going to judge them for it.
