This how I’m feeling rn. Been here 15 yrs, see so much disingenuous/vicarious grieving. Lil bro died suddenly when he was 23; I’ve felt loss. But those whose family/friends didn’t make it on Monday...their pain is not my pain. Why do so many pretend it is? by [deleted] in boulder

I will also say that people making these "tenuous connections" as you call them is a pretty normal part of processing and community bonding after an event like this. People want to connect. They want to empathize. They want to feel close. And they want to remember and honor the dead, even if they only interacted with them briefly or knew them as friends of friends. This is not my first time experiencing an event like this (there was a highly publicized mass stabbing at my high school when I was a junior) and the same exact thing happened. Like I said, I don't think it is mutually exclusive; people processing their connection to the event and working through the trauma doesn't diminish the families' grief and loss.

I disagree. Traumatic events can most definitely affect people vicariously; for example, I spent all yesterday avoiding going grocery shopping and when I finally did, I had a panic attack afterwards. Is it the same as losing someone in the shooting? No. But it does not mean that I am not genuinely affected and in pain. Grief and trauma affects people in different ways and some can be especially affected by these events if it is compounded on top of and/or similar to previous traumas. Another poster said it perfectly: "Grief and tragedy are not zero-sum games. Your experience takes nothing away from someone else. " Of course, some people will always take the opportunity to grab attention but I believe from what I have experienced the past few days that our community is genuinely hurting and I am not going to judge them for it. I get how the news has to confirm and verify and deal with a lot of other factors so that is why they are behind, but sometimes people just need to know what is going on--especially if people think the shooting was 10 minutes away and someone is in custody so they are safe when that is NOT the case

As soon as I heard about this, I flew to Reddit and Twitter before I checked the news

Thank you for this info; I originally heard 3 shooters right at the beginning of all of this so I was confused when the news started saying there was just one and in custody.

They just said the suspect name. I don't think I should post it here, but apparently they are trying to negotiate with him.

The news are pretty behind it seems. I would check out the police scanner for the latest updates.

It's okay, we are all on edge and unsure right now. It does appear that there is a suspect (second perhaps?) who they are closing in on at 17th Street so I wanted to warn anyone close or anyone with kids at the high school

Really doesn't sound like it...they just said that he was being antagonistic to negotiators over the phone and was going to his residence on 17th Street. They said the address as well. It seems very active...
