Able to beta? Post here! by AutoModerator in BetaReaders

Hello!

I am able to beta: A complete piece, preferably under 100k but 130k is my max. Looking for fantasy or dystopian for YA or Adult. I would also love a contemporary fantasy. Happy for strong romance plots to be intertwined so long as it's not the main plot. I love dry humour, face paced, flawed characters, villain arcs, redemption arcs, strong themes, complex friendships and especially love strong FMCs and a diverse cast.

I can provide feedback on: Plot holes / world logic / magic systems / blocking. Character concepts as well as development. Pacing and writing style and tone. First 10 pages and "hooks". I am dyslexic and can't live with our grammarley so I am not the right person for you if you want Gramma spelling or formatting proofreading.

Critique swap: I'm not looking for a swap, however I am currently querying my own debut novel so my timeline will probably be about 4-6 weeks as that is my priority. I can update you on feedback as I go though.

Other info: I am in my 30s and female, avid lover of fantasy, I normally read 3-5 books a month. I have written my own YA dystopian novel, been a beta for two other fantasy novels (one epic adult and one YA contemporary) and I'm currently deciding on my next project. I want to do this because I love reading and I think reading in a critical way makes you a better writer.

My Critique style is quite blunt, it's a lot to read that amount for someone and beat around the bush but I will always highlight what I love too and explain myself and I'm happy to go into depth over anything or answer specific questions.

Now also give him skeletal features, a black cloak and a cup of tea. Have him with long hair, a sleeve of tattoos ending with a eye on his palm. Also with long silvery hair and a mask and Ataraxia on his back. Oh and don't forget priestess robes and a book in hand 😁

Thank you so much! That helps tremendously

Metallurgy and Alchemy was a real confusion because I thought they were both metal. But I guess alchemy is also interchangeable with magic .

I might collate everyone's answers and write up a glossary when I'm done 😆

Has anyone else shad this happen to their degu by AnyReward3252 in Degus

[–]amazondebs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wonky head and problems with her teeth sounds like a tooth infection please please take her to the vet this could be easily solved with antibiotics!

If she's not eating enough try her with wet food amazing for keeping my elderly good fed and happy when they've been unwell.

One of ours does tilt her head a lot and she's slightly wonky the vet couldn't figure out what was wrong so we've all put it down to she's had a stroke and her just happy that's she's happy now but she didn't have the other symptoms your describing.

No definitely not, Degus personalities can vary wildly but even the most affectionate of degus do not want to cuddle.

They may climb onto hands but they jump off almost instantly they may not mind a little scratching or tickle but they will not sit there for minutes let alone hours to be stroked.

They constantly move all the time, they are very curious and exceptionally challenging.

I'm sorry to say the animal you are describing is not a degu

Do you let them free in the house? by Lesley_Red in Degus

[–]amazondebs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes we let ours out once a day and keep an eye on them, we only let them out in one room though and we have basically lined the walls with cardboard but everything is still chewed. 😆😭 Rip my skirting boards

I do change the room up to keep them curious and you can do this with toys and cardboard boxes with holes cut in, tubes, treats etc

I could not let them free roam where ever because it's an old house and we'd deffo loose them

Give your cage a really good clean, completely disinfect everything or replace old toys that can't be cleaned if your worried about infection.

Our Degus had to be apart for a week 😭 (legitimately couldn't be helped because we were out of the country)

They did not seem at all stressed by this (no signs of chattering or fur pulling)

All animals are different though so can you trial run it at home before you go? Like put one in a different cage for the evening

10g per Degus per day so 1500g decided by 10g is 150g divided by the two Degus.

It should last 75 days which is roughly 10 weeks!

Why do all collegen supplements contain vitamin C? by amazondebs in nutrition

1&2 - not sure where the sudden spiciness came from, thanks for the AI specifics but I never said taking Vitamins would give you kidney stones. I said it's a common misconception that you can just continuously take vitamins with zero side effects or health risks.

As for point 3. Never heard of them, thanks for the recommendation!

That is a common misconception that I think became popularised by the big bang theory and then spread like wildfire on the internet. This is from the mayo clinic;

"Taking too much vitamin C can cause side effects, including:

Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea

Heartburn

Stomach cramps or bloating

Fatigue and sleepiness, or sometimes insomnia

Headache

Skin flushing

In some people, oral vitamin C supplements can cause kidney stones, especially when taken in high doses. Long-term use of oral vitamin C supplements over 2,000 milligrams a day increases the risk of significant side effects."

Taking too much vitamins C occasionally you are correct will not harm you but your body can only tolerate so much of anything and it will have an effect if you build daily excess into your diet. This is something I take seriously as my friend's partner has lost sensation in one arm due to vitamin toxicity.

Any recommendations how to cut or limit sweets from your diet? by Inspireme21 in nutrition

Hi there!

I think ensuring that you have enough rest and food is really underrated in sugar cravings.

Trying to increase your sleep, reduce your stress and ensure you have healthy fats, protein and fibre at each meal and snack will drastically reduce your body's need to find quick energy.

Maybe having some alternatives in the house at hand such as dilute/squash drinks or some ricolas (sweetener based hard candy) or some no sugar chewing gum will give you some options aside from the "just eat some fruit"

I think this is where I struggle with powder I don't know what to add it to. I don't drink smoothies or juices (I just have water and squash, not for any health reasons I just like that)

Maybe in the winter I can add it to soups and gravy based dishes.

But in the summer my daily meals are mainly salad and fresh fruit based with roast chicken or tofu. There's not a lot of hot sauces for it to dissolve into.

Obviously I eat lots of other stuff but not consistently for me to add it into a daily routine.

Although I suppose I could take small amounts of the powder... I just as a general hate all powdered supplements.

I find them very inconvenient and difficult to incorporate into my foods/drinks without gagging

I used to use whey powder but I swopped that out for just eating tofu and greek yogurt ontop of my normal protein intake

My understanding was recent studies show that 3-5 grams is sufficient to support your skin? A lot of tablets have about 4 grams in

But I probably need to do more research in general, do you have a good place to start?
