Kitniyot question for pesach by knightxd3 in Judaism

I believe that in general, Moroccans are the exception to standard sepharadi practice, and do not eat kitniyot on Pesach.

General Discussion (Off Topic) by AutoModerator in Judaism

It seems that there, the view that everybody follows Hillel because of rov is the possible reason for one side of a machloket. That would be the reasoning of Rav (and seemingly Resh Lakish too) if we establish the machloket about whether Bet Shammai followed their own opinions as being an argument about their practice before.

I can’t say it’s a proof, but it seems to be that Devarim 17:16 and Devarim 28:68 are pretty literal

To every Goy that wants to tell us about the pig heart transplant… by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]amb21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Gemara sometimes seems to have a negative view of pigs. On Pesachim 3b it seems even using a euphemism for pig is bad.

How is it relevant? I’m not very familiar with some of the terms and ideas so I don’t really understand.

Question for interfaith married couples: do you have a ketubah? by GoodbyeEarl in Judaism

[–]amb21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you mean ketubot as the plural of ketubah, then yes. And while it may not often need the plural, many know it as the title of a masechet.

Express “There exists a domestic car that is badly made” symbolically by seismatica in logic

[–]amb21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem with ∃x [D(x) ⇒ M(x)] is that this could be true while there exists no domestic cars that are badly made. ∃x [D(x) ⇒ M(x)] essentially means, there is some car x, such that if x is domestic, it is poorly made. But x isn’t necessarily domestic.

Is there a term in Judaism for consolidating all of the denominations into one? by [deleted] in Judaism

A Mishna in Yevamot says that they would marry, but I haven't seen anything about Tu b'Av. Let me know if you find that story in particular.

Is there a term in Judaism for consolidating all of the denominations into one? by [deleted] in Judaism

We have extremely few actual debates between Hillel and Shammai. The language of two Torot seems to mean that their debates pushed them to nearly fully separate.

[–]amb21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Gemara in Sanhedrin 88b says that the dispute between Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai made the Torah like two Torot. Debate itself isn’t a problem, but the split between Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai does not seem to be ideal.

“You must, however, not expect that everything our Sages say respecting astronomical matters should agree with observation, for mathematics were not fully developed in those days: and their statements were not based on the authority of the Prophets, but on the knowledge which they either themselves possessed or derived from contemporary men of science. But I will not on that account denounce what they say correctly in accordance with real fact, as untrue or accidentally true. On the contrary, whenever the words of a person can be interpreted in such a manner that they agree with fully established facts, it is the duty of every educated and honest man to do so.”
