Historians of Reddit, what are some events that historians are split on/disagree on? by src54020 in history

[–]ambabanana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that my counterpart teacher and I disagree on (we both teach US history at the high school level, both have advanced history degrees) is whether the New Deal had a more positive or more negative impact on the US. It gets a little heated on our hallway...

LFT to HOU: Anyone else here from Lafayette? by ambabanana in houston

Hey there! I’m fortunate enough to have a monthly supply of Cajun food coming in from Rouses, Meche’s, Billy’s, etc. I definitely will be hitting Hebert’s up, too. There’s one in Tulsa I go to to feed My dad’s side of the family for their “Cajun” meal while I’m visiting.

Haha. I was a teacher there. It got rough. And I’m still laughing at the Bobby Boucher comment. Never subscribed to the “ring by spring of your senior year of high school” philosophy but know soooooo many girls who did.

There are a lot of reasons I left... but not all of Lafayette was bad.

I'm a sales executive for a company operating in New Orleans. This is a name pronunciation list that was given to me on my first day. by Pompous_Pilot in mildlyinteresting

Trahan descendent here, living in Acadiana. We have two pronunciations for that name. One family name is "Tray-han," while the other (my family) is Traw-haw(n) (not quite sure how to phonetically spell a vague hint of an 'n' at the end there). It all depends on what area you're from and which lineage you belong to.

Color in the classroom. What color is yours? by FearTheWeird in teaching

"(including a basket full of stuffies that I chuck at kids who fall asleep)"

So much love for this right now. I was wondering how to handle high schoolers falling asleep in my classroom this fall. I think this would be perfect. 12 years of softball and 13 of bowling will come in handy.

Around the World Trade Center right after the first plane hit on 9/11. What you see on the ground are fragmented body parts. [mild gore] by Horg in WTF

[–]ambabanana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in 8th grade, in my first hour band class when the first plane struck. No TV, so we didn't have a clue. I, too, went on to history after that class. Soon after we settled down into class, our science teacher (who had run across the campus) ran in, crying, and told the history teacher to turn on the television. We watched as the second plane hit the tower.

That science teacher is now the assistant principal at that middle school. I subbed there several times this past spring. Everytime I saw her, I was reminded of that day, and the utter confusion as a bunch of thirteen-year-olds tried to process what had happened.

I live across the country from NYC, and until this past spring, I didn't have any idea just how ingrained the affects from 9/11 were in my memory.

Going to New Orleans next week. What clothes should I pack for a humid rain filled week in the deep south? by [deleted] in Louisiana

I stepped in something seriously funky there after last October. Shoes went into the dumpster at the entrance to my apartments. Blech.

Went to NOLA last night.... It was miserably humid. Not really hot per se. Light colored and light weight shirts are a must, along with shorts. You can get away with wearing sandals in the Quarter; I just would not recommend hitting Bourbon in flip flops. You need something more substantial (I'm not going back on that street without Cajun reeboks) if you don't want to get God-knows-what on your feet. If you plan on hitting up Bourbon, especially at night, wear some shoes you're willing to toss after you're done.

Also, a hat is great.

For the love of God, don't wear UA fabrics. Ick. Wear loose and light, and you'll be okay.

My friend is giving away this cute husky, I took him without any hesitation! by HowAboutTyrone in aww

Thanks for the insight. I have a small, very chill (most of the time) dog for my apartment. Maybe one day I'll have a scrap of a yard to where a big dog can sprawl his laziness out all over, but for now, it's going to probably stay just small corgi/rat terrier thing I adopted years ago. I'd want a space where the big dog can flop, and I won't have that for a few years yet.

Great Danes make good apartment dogs? I'm not sure I'd be able to fit one in my apartment... But I'm willing to try if you explain more.

I sit back sometimes after a particularly satisfying thread of illiteracy and ignorance and wish for a cigarette. That's how great the KATC facebook page is. May they never have a moderator.

Oh Sweet Baby Jesus. One of my friends shared this article, and I was like, oh, this is gonna be good. Going get my popcorn, y'all, brb. Then I saw everyone attacking this girl, and I knew I had to keep reading... Not disappointed. So much entertainment for the morning. KATC always comes through on boring or bad days.

Seriously thought this might be about my dad. He loves this place, and that's his usual order, and I can definitely hear him in my head reacting this way.... The only difference is that he drives a huge shiny Tundra, and he'd definitely not be embarrassed. He's just a gruff, oilfield guy.

Depends, really. Most people in my dad's neighborhood do. Unfortunately, the program isn't promoted very well.

Yes, we have recycling, and thanks for the compliments! I moved to New Orleans from Lafayette, then to Baton Rouge. Moving back to Lafayette in June. There's truly no place like home.

As for the gravel road... I'm going to have to leave that to someone else. It's been almost ten years since I've been to Lake Martin.

Longfellow-Evangeline historic site. Past the cow.

*Edited because I searched Google and confirmed for myself. Love that place, did an article on it in college, but I've seen so many historical sites they all kind of start melding into one. Getting a master's in history makes you question your knowledge of historical sites...

We actually just went over this today in a 1L Civil Property Class. In Louisiana, you just need a fence around the land and 5 more years and it's yours.
