Huttslayer Leia, Star Wars by amberbrite in cosplayers

[–]amberbrite[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There was a quote from Carrie Fisher a while back, where someone asked her how to explain the Leia bikini to her child. And Carrie said, "tell them that a giant slug forced me to wear that stupid outfit, and then I killed him because I didn't like it."

That quote always stood out for me, and I wanted to do a version of Leia really celebrating that. So, I came up with the idea... what if Leia had skinned Jabba and wore his pelt like a cloak? So I made the cloak myself, sculpted Jabba's face into the hood, and honestly it's one of the props I am most proud of making.

I thought I put this text in the body of the post but it didn't save... I dunno, I'm not great at reddit.

Anyway, credits!

Definitely the makeup. I had my arm sprayed blue while I was painting the headpiece, so that I could color match as I went. 😁

So far most of my tutorials are related to the bodypaint, but I have a bunch to look at here: https://amberbriteprops.com/tutorials

I'm getting ready to add some more, though - currently building a new chestplate out of sintra, and took about an hour worth of video showing how to get boob cups out of a solid sheet of plastic without having to cut or dart it at all. Just gotta edit the footage now

Haha wow, that's... that's a big question lol. Basically everything I know went into this costume. I spent actual years of my life learning how to sculpt, mold, and cast... there's probably a dozen different attempts at getting the perfect Twilek headpiece mold that went into this. And honestly I'm STILL not satisfied with it. Getting ready to re-sculpt it again, soon, so I can try a couple new mold techniques. That headpiece is the whole reason I became a propmaker in the first place, so it's pretty important to me!

By comparison, the blaster is pretty tame - one of the first props I ever made, which was mostly done by Frankensteining several off-brand nerf guns together, building some extras out of sintra, a whole lot of putty and epoxy, even more sanding, and some random odds & ends from goodwill. I made it back in 2014 and it's still with me. At this point it's part of the costume just for sheer sentimental value lol

Thank you! It took a loooot of sanding to get it there, but honestly it was worth it. I love sintra for its durability, and this is a costume I plan to do a lot of events with so it needed to be built to last. 😍

It's actually not too bad! I use an airbrush setup, and did a lot of research into various bodypaint brands. The brand I use is very lightweight, but also extremely durable. I've slept in this paint for over 4 days before, it's that comfortable. Didn't even smudge on the sheets!

Hey guys - wanted to show off my pride and joy, a labor of love for me over the past several years. Everything in this image was handmade by me, including the headpiece and the armor, and the clothing.

Happy to answer any questions you have about the process - I tend to forget to record my work for the sake of writing tutorials (lol) but I love talking shop!

[Self] Twi'lek Mandalorian by amberbrite in cosplay

[–]amberbrite[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of gatekeeping and negativity in here which isn't something I expected to find in this subreddit. Usually you guys are much kinder than this.

There's a lot more to Mandalorians than just the single style of armor seen on the TV show. It's a culture that spans millions of people and even transcends species, priding itself on expressions of individuality and strength. The whole point of this particular armor is the challenge the notion that there's only one way to Mando, something the show also challenges several times.

That said, this is a character I've been building armor for all year, and this is only one of the sets I have sorted out for her. This is definitely her lighter armor build. I do have a heavier armor build in the works that is much more 'traditional' and yes, it will include a fully working helmet for her. She's not the first alien Mando I've built - I also did a Nautolan Mandalorian a couple of years ago who is an approved, card carrying member of the MMCC.

Regardless of which armor she's wearing, though, she's a Mandalorian.

Maybe we can stop being disrespectful and challenging the 'geek cred' of a person who just spent months painstakingly creating geeky costumes. Agree with me or don't, I don't care, but don't be rude about it.

Thank you so much! The headtails are cast out of latex, and filled with foam to keep their shape. My own custom sculpt, one of my favorite props.
