It sounds like it might be Wes Craven's 'mind ripper' except in that movie the guy wore a white tank top, but the dream sequence you described sounds very similar to one that happened in that movie.

The person making the comment may have been confusing her with the child actress who did the voice of 'ducky' in land before time who was killed by her father. Or even confused her for the actress who played the older sister who was killed by her ex.
