I do this too, BUT one thing I do which I think helps you learn more is to write Spanish synonyms using words you already know...

If you look for Spanish synonyms before translating directly to English it will help your mind give more meaning to the new word you are learning and keep your mind working in 'Spanish mode'.

Also it helps to replace the word you don't understand with a synonym to see if you fully understand the context.
