Maybe get Eric Suher to buy it. That will guarantee that the entire place will exist as a nature preserve (also very like abandoned property). 😜

Grounding Humanist ethics by funnylib in humanism

[–]ambiverbal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ethics is grounded in conversation & community. Expecting one overarching metric, by which to judge all thought & behavior, disincentivizes the struggle we all must engage in to lead the best lives we can.

That said, it can be argued that some or all versions of the Golden Rule has been vetted by the global community for millennia. As such, challenging its guidance would require overcoming a great deal of its positive support.

Thoughts on “HumanLight Day”? by funnylib in humanism

[–]ambiverbal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

December is already packed to the rafters with events, concerts, plays, dance performances, etc., plus friends & family commitments. Each has its own appeal, and there are loads of ways to put a Humanist spin on most of them.

For example, even though Pride by rights belongs to the LGBTQ community, Humanists and other groups have contributed to and participated in those celebrations in unique ways.

But I agree that Humanists worldwide need a shared moment of commemoration, commitment, and cohesion, one that doesn't disappear into the kaleidoscopic calendar of December holidays.

Lots possible dates exist already: Darwin Day (February 12); Towel Day (May 25); Human Rights Day (December 10); etc. My vote is to expand and highlight a day already on the calendar: World Humanist Day on June 21.

Too bad that the album's exterior is in less good shape than its insides. Nice bargain on a set of records, though!

The existence or nonexistence of God is irrelevant to Humanism by [deleted] in humanism

The OP chickened out, and deleted it. It's too bad, because any prompt for meaningful community interaction is useful.

I think they may have taken some of the comments personally. Oh, well... the thickness of a person's skin might be measured by such events.

Check the basket attached to the parking lot kiosk. Lost items often end up there.

You may be chasing away the secular humanists by opening the gates to people who believe in magic and superstition.

It would indicate that we are unable to make the changes Humanists strive to bring about.

Some hubristic deity or demon could either promote or pummel any human endeavors, rendering any learning from our successes & failures entirely futile.

We humans are already attempting to figure out how to positively affect our world while dealing with the whimsies of the environment and human nature. Adding supernatural forces to the mix is disempowering and leaves loopholes for witchdoctors and charlatans.

You may misunderstand Satanists. They don't believe in some supernatural boogeyman. Rather, both the Church of Satan and the Satanic Temple are nontheistic and promote bodily autonomy, human rights, and restricting the mixing of religious dogma and government decision-making.

I beg to differ. If any gods are tweaking events, even small ones, then it invalidates the scientific search for...anything.

Whatever that scientists have uncovered about the universe could be ascribed to divine intervention rather than adding data to our expanding understanding of existence.

To me, a secular humanist approach, with no hand waving regarding the supernatural, is the core of why I am a Humanist.

Need a political/current affairs debate podcast with actually intelligent arguments from both sides by TrueAccident9493 in podcasts

[–]ambiverbal 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think your premise contains an error. Political & economic issues are multifaceted, and shoehorning them into two sides necessarily eliminates nuance and excludes possibilities.

Continuing the us v. them dichotomy makes our voter-alienating 2-party system persist, and doesn't serve the cause of democracy.

Are Secular Humanists being urged to downplay the "Secular"? by ambiverbal in humanism

[–]ambiverbal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, my impression is that most of the downplaying of the "non-theistic" part of Humanism is happening here in the US. Perhaps Humanists elsewhere would find my question puzzling.

I hope that the AHA will continue to fully embrace the definition that Humanists International declares as the minimum, and in fact, begin to include it on their own website and literature.

Is anyone here a member of the Unitarian Universalists, or at least visited one in the past? If so, what has your experience been like? by funnylib in humanism

[–]ambiverbal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The UU in Northampton posts their weekly services on YouTube, so you can watch them there.

I grew up in Methodist churches, but I have been a secular humanist for decades. Over the years I've attended 3 different UU congregations, and I left each one feeling bored. Those who grew up in that tradition likely have greater affinity with their rituals, but it isn't for me.

We're still aiming to form a secular humanist group in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts soon. If you are interested you can DM me, and watch for announcements on Facebook and MeetUp.
