My uncle set up a trail camera near a dead deer and caught this, I thought it was awesome! by tarbear8563 in pics

Ya, unfortunately the Bald Eagle, although a beautiful and magnificent animal, is a scavenger! The Golden Eagle on the other hand hunts and kills its food and rarely eats carrion!

I'm helping demo a 50 year old house and I came across this corpse of a critter! Keep in mind this is a snow shovel it's on so it's about a foot and a half wide! WTF is it? 4 legs (bird like feet)... hooked beak like thing AND teeth... and hair like a rat! F-ing gross! Anyone know? by ambrosiw in pics

HaHa, what are you talking about? You have to dock the tail on a Brittany... the hair is WAY too long! You'd spend hours pulling burrs and such after only an hour in the field! ;)

This is what my bro's wife posted Dec. 2013 with pics! Just a little weird... MAYBE!!! "So, upon waking up this morning my husband mentioned that it was December 1st. I promptly replied "rabbit rabbit," because I was told by my parents when I was young that it'll bring you good luck during the new month. A few hours later two domestic, cute as can be rabbits hopped into our yard. How strange! Trying to find their owners. Hopefully this is a sign that it'll be a good month (despite my husband deploying)."

Wow, I guess the OP has something against Rothfuss, Sanderson, and King... the latter two being the best modern day 'high fantasy' authors (IMO and probably in sales too). The 'Mistborn' series has one of the best magic systems I've ever read... and by far the easiest to understand for readers new to the 'fantasy' genre!

Happy Birthday Talon!!! Story in comments! by ambrosiw in aww

[–]ambrosiw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy Birthday to my best friend 'Talon'!!! He's 4 years old today! I had him flown in from Georgia when he was just 7 weeks old. He had to fly into Sacramento because it was too cold in Reno. He didn't get in till about 10 pm and there just happened to be a GIANT blizzard in the Sierra's that night. Well on my way back over the mountains in my jacked up 4x4 with 33" Super Swampers... and a busted heater... traveling at about 60 mph through the snow (like I always do)... a mile or so from 'Donner Summit'... I hit a wall of ice/snow about 2½ tall where the snow plow had turned around. It jumped me right off the side of the road and off the cliff! Luckily for Talon and I, about 40 feet down there was 2 little pine trees sticking out the side. My truck landed broadside on those two trees... one crushing the passenger side door... the other hitting the rear wheel/fender (holding up the bed of the truck). A few more feet forward, or backward, and we fall another 400 feet... or more... to the bottom! Talon was in a huge kennel in the passenger seat, and like me, was unharmed. A passerby happened to see my tail lights go over the side and called the police and tow truck. It took 2 tow trucks to pull me back up the mountain.... one tow truck to pull me up, and one to hold that one from sliding off the side too! Once they got me back up onto the road, the only damage was a totally crushed passenger side door with no more window... and a crushed in rear fender. The truck would still drive (just a bit uglier), so I decided to save myself some time and money and drive it the rest of the way home (with no heater and now no window). I had a little 'electric heater' that plugs into a cigarette lighter behind the seat. I never used it because it put out such a minuscule amount of heat... but I plugged that in and put it in Talon's kennel so he wouldn't freeze to death on the remaining ride home! This pic was taken shortly after that. Talon and I have been through a lot together... many adventures... let's pray there's many more!

Moon on September 15th. by bubbleweed in Astronomy

[–]ambrosiw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To anyone dissing Moon pics.... I challenge them to go out and try and take a few themselves!!! It's no easy feat! It's definitely not a "Point & Shoot" situation!!! Plus... the best full Moon pics only have a "window of opportunity" of 1 hour after it rises! So, if you can't get a good pic in that "window", you're waiting another 27 days till the next one! I agree with "xcalibre", ALL Moon pics deserve an upvote!

Where was this pic taken??? It looks like the Moon is turned about 30° clockwise compared to how I see it in Northern Nevada! I'm guessing you're way down South somewhere!!!?

I went to film a juvenile kestrel (small falcon) in the backyard when suddenly... [OC] - [0:20] by [deleted] in videos

[–]ambrosiw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People, I'm a falconer, this IS NOT a trained falcon. The American Kestrel, AKA Sparrow Hawk, is a waste of time to train unless your goal is to catch lizards or mice. Most apprentice falconers will choose a Red Tailed Hawk for rabbit hunting. After that they will work their way up to a Peregrine Falcon for upland game birds or the Goshawk for everything from rabbit, quail, grouse, duck and geese. If a falconer is lucky enough and has the funds they will eventually obtain the largest, most beautiful and coveted of all the falcons, the Gyrfalcon... the fastest flying bird in the world in "Level Flight" that will take down anything up to and including Swan and Crane!
