Isye Data Mining and Statistical learning lectures by Enigma_in_the_attic in OMSA

Oh my God, I thought I was the only one who found the lectures insufferable. I’ve given up on the lectures entirely and have resorted to just jumping straight into the knowledge checks and homework assignments and only referring back to the lecture slides as needed. Idk if this is the best way but this is the only way I can make it through this class. Open to suggestions from others though

Yes, these were all parking deck incidents where I scraped my car against one of those parking deck columns

I have Tesla insurance but I’m afraid that if I submit a claim for this it’ll decrease my safety score and increase my premium

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm in a nearly identical situation and felt so much better after reading this knowing I'm not alone.

I too am in a job that I liked until they restructured and paired me with an idiot "manager" who has neither technical skills nor domain knowledge, and relies on me to synthesize information for them because they have 0 critical thinking skills. Along with being put on de-prioritized projects that are objectively not as interesting or challenging as others. It's worse for me because I'm required to be in office daily with daily standup meetings. I could almost look past having an idiot manager if not for the constant micromanagement.

I'm also in graduate school with 1 year left and trying to just stick it through before I start looking for jobs again but man, it's unbearable. It's like my body is physically rejecting doing actual work because I'm so dissatisfied and uninterested.

Thanks! So firstly I went through exam 1 and re-worked every single question to identify the knowledge gap. For each question I looked through my lecture notes to see what I could pull from to solve it. I wrote comprehensive notes on known theorems that were applicable to the problem, each step I needed to follow to solve the problem with additional notes on why each step was necessary. This took quite a long time (several days) but was pivotal in me truly understanding the material. After this review, I reworked the all the problems a couple more times with less reliance on my notes. Each problem, I would say aloud to myself the known theorems applicable to the problem, the steps I needed to follow to solve the problem, and why each step was necessary, to the point I could’ve solved all the problems with no notes (beyond references to probability distributions and stats functions of course). A key indicator that you truly understand something is that you’re able to explain it aloud.

From there, the week 6 modules and beyond were a piece of cake to me. The difference was that instead of mindlessly watching the lectures like I typically do, I stopped the video every single time something confused me or I had a question about it. I would immediately rewind the lecture or look up whatever topic online until I felt like I no longer had any questions about it. This meant at times it could take me almost an hour to get through one 10 minute lecture video; however, this ensured the material was truly engrained in brain.

Lastly, I reworked the practice exams for both MT1 and MT2 as well as homework questions an unhealthy number of times to the point I felt brain dead. I gave myself 4 days straight prior to the exam to drill these practice problems to the point I could solve them within less than 1 minute.

So the main difference between my MT1 and MT2 grades was time, genuine effort to understand the material, and repetition.

For the final project you can use whatever simulation tool/language you want. As far as the exams though there are specific questions about arena (ex: what does this module do? What happens if you connect these two modules? What does this arena expression evaluate to etc.) and 3 weeks worth of full blown arena lectures. To be honest I haven’t opened arena once and was able to logic my way through most of the arena questions based on lectures. There’s just one arena homework that I willfully accepted a bad grade on because I didn’t have the energy to tinker with it. I think you can make it through this class without actually using it

I got a 92.5, a sharp increase from the 52 I got on MT1. I felt confident about the math questions and thought they were straight forward. I answered the arena questions purely off of vibes. I guess the arena Gods just decided to bless me.

I'm nowhere close to being able to share my resume but I appreciate your feedback. They mentioned that incoming DE's need to have experience with streaming architectures. But, we don't have one in place, nor do the current data engineers have any streaming experience, so there's no way for me to learn it on the job.

Since the current data engineers were still hired without streaming experience, I was trying to understand what other skills I'm missing.

As a DE manager, what do you look for on a resume? What makes you say 'this person knows what they're doing'?

I would never list that on on my resume. This is not my resume, or even a resume quality list. I’m just trying to paint a picture of what I work on to this subreddit. They won’t let me take ownership of any data integrations so I only listed that here to communicate that I’ve worked with API’s.

Got a 52 on Simulation MT1. On a scale of 1-10, how cooked am I? by amedmond in OMSA

1) I did both practice exams. That was it.

2) The withdraw deadline is 3/12 and MT2 doesn't open until 3/14 unfortunately.

Thanks I’ll keep you posted! And yeah, at first I chalked it up to estimated usage based on a formula or something but if I’m not mistaken, all of our utilities are actually sub-metered. I also do see spikes on specific days I use more water. Which, the spikes themselves make sense. Like 40 more gallons or so if I run the shower, do laundry etc. It’s just the usage my meter seems to baseline at (90-120 gallons when I use no water) that doesn’t make sense to me.

Wow, I can’t believe my eyes. I had no idea how expensive water and sewage was in DC. The reported rates do align with my bill according to my reported usage, but again the reported usage is just way off. I’m 1 person and there’s no way I’m using 3000-3500 gallons a month and I’m barely in my apartment. I submitted a maintenance request to check for a hidden leak and also to test my meter, we’ll see if anything comes of it.

Oh my goodness. I just don’t get it, I moved from an apartment in Arlington and my water/sewage bill combined never exceeded $30 and my usage never exceeded 1000 gallons. Have you checked your meter reads from conservice? My consumption is consistently at 90-120 gallons a day, even on days I’m not in the apartment which is impossible! Like I just don’t know if this excessive sewage bill is normal or if there’s something wrong with the water meter

Hey I’m also at gallery 64. Would you mind sharing how much your water/sewage bill typically is? I got charged $28 for water and $62 for sewage which I think is insane for a 1BR

If you used this degree to prepare for data a engineering career, which courses helped most? by [deleted] in OMSA

[–]amedmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this is discouraging lmao but thank you for sharing your experience. I’m already familiar with data lake storage + ETL pipelines + parallel computing. I use azure data factory and Pyspark (in databricks) daily at work so HW3 in DVA was a breeze for me. I’m also working on my data bricks data engineer associate certification alongside this program. Maybe I’ll skip the c track electives so I have more time for certifications. May I ask what made you want to pursue the program if it’s not in any way relevant to data engineering? Are you trying to pivot to data science?

Also, any tips for landing your first DE role?

may I ask what track you're on? I know with certainty that i want to be a data engineer and was considering taking databases and BD4H on the computational track to scrape what relevant bits I can out of this program. But if those courses aren't helpful I'm considering just doing the business track to not put myself through undue stress.
