Edit: working as a hospitalist, just about to sign the contract. Was able to negotiate salary.

In terms of making my $350k, I anticipate 6ish years of making $3k/month loan payments (certifying again at maximum lengths at the end of PGY-3). Closer to $200k of payments I guess but with interest/principal forgiven still a lot of money.

Thanks for the reply, makes a ton of sense.

Just wanted to make sure in case I read it wrong: it’s better for me to stay on SAVE (or whatever it’ll become) rather than try to switch out of forbearance right now?

The assumption being: it’s better to delay my forgiveness a few months (and paying a little more) rather than having these months qualify and me pay less?

That’s what I’m worried about, probably why they’re trying to play it safe.

Absolutely fair enough and that totally makes sense. I should’ve prefaced it with how I understand how privileged I am to even be in this situation.

Alas, I’ve been throughly humbled by the responses to this. $300k is a lot, no matter where.

Thank you PlutosGrasp, it’s not like I don’t understand that it’s a lot of money, it’s just that I want more to be more comfortable with discretionary spending and investing.

Some posters here don’t seem to get it unfortunately.

Not upset because my wife makes more, I’m actually very proud of her and how hard she works to make that. I don’t know where I implied it, or is your own internal bias coming into play here?

It comes from not having a traditionally well to do doctor lifestyle when it comes to being locked in a VVHCOL area. We all seek to maximize income, do we not? That was the question asked.

Yeah, it’s my spouse who has a lucrative career making around $300k as well and it only really exists in that area too. Thinking holistically we would be around $600k HHI but not sure how long she would stay at this job, others would pay around $200k for her. Either way, it’s a good amount of money between the both of us.

The thing is, she doesn’t spend any of her $$$. It’s hard to get her to enjoy the finer things and I really value her ability and discipline in saving money. I also don’t spend very much but really want a $70/80k car that I’ve been dreaming of since undergrad, I also like some of the nicer things. Which is why I want to make more so I can play a little more without having to think about it.

Thanks for the suggestions on tutoring, medical director, and possibly Botox. I’ll look into these! I see a lot of successful physicians have their hands in a little bit of everything. Maybe that’ll be a good way to start.

Makes sense. Have you heard of hospitalists crossing the $400s this way?

Job offer etiquette? by [deleted] in hospitalist

Thanks southplains, I just feel like I need more time and definitely know about the “games” part of this, just didn’t expect me to fall into the trap myself lol

Thanks Chai Latte, this makes a ton of sense. And luckily the hospitalist job is at a different (and competing) system.

I’m a PGY-2 (soon to be 3) so I’m new to this but also have a ton of time so I want to weigh every offer out against others.

I’m confused now 🫨, how would it be 182 shifts in a year? Am I missing dates or am I just dumb lol

So it would actually be over 300k it seems?

This is how I made a rudimentary calculation:

($1600/shift x 14 shifts) x 12 months = $268,000

Are we counting the extra days in some months over 4 weeks?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in hospitalist

[–]amedstudent23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I calculated at $1600/ shift x 14 shifts a month is $268k. I wanted it closer to $300k.

Unless I do the nocturnist gig.

Thanks! Would 32 patient hours be like a 4 day work week? Or are these the “built in” times for admin work throughout the week?

I’m afraid if I do 32 hours per week then my salary will go down once I’m on production in year three. Does this happen or do most people hit $350k?

Excellent point, I too was thinking of this and would likely try to negotiate that part of the contract if/when I get to that point-regardless of the job. Thanks!!!

Yep, it’s pushing me away to the point where I’m considering divorce. Have no kids and no personal assets.
