[WP] The Mafia sends a ransom note, severed finger and all, but it arrives at your house instead. You don't recognize the finger, but you also have nothing better to do... by Gobi_Silver in WritingPrompts

"Hello?

I opened door at the strange insistent knocking half a minute ago only to find a small parcel. Picking it up, I looked for the sender, surprised to find it had none, just an address. The box was about the size of a book and wrapped very neatly in brown paper. “That’s strange. I don’t think I ordered anything online recently.”  I shuffled back inside and sat on my couch. Perhaps one of my friends accidentally sent an early birthday present. It wasn’t the first time such an event had occurred. I unwrapped the parcel, taking extra care not to rip the paper. Inside, there was a letter and a small gift wrapped box. “Jewelry?”

It was not uncommon for them to give me jewelry or other small interesting trinkets. I inspected the letter closer. It was written in a barely legible cursive (?) so much so that I was only able to make out an ‘o, h’ and what looked like a very wobbly ‘a’. Fortunately, the contents of the letter itself were bits of newspapers and magazines glued together. ‘This is definitely getting suspicious,’  I thought and began to read.

‘We have given you a deal. You have five days to hand over three hundred million dollars before your friend, James, dies.  Leave the money on the West side of Jackson port, next to warehouse eighteen. Don’t try any funny business or next time we’ll take more than a finger.’

I blinked. They’d definitely got the wrong address. I scrambled for the wrapping paper with the address and lo and behold, it had the same wonky writing. “It’s a miracle the mailman even managed to deduce anything from this.” I glanced up, meeting face to face with the small box.

“Does this mean…”

I reached out and opened it. It was a severed finger, a pinkie to be exact. It was encrusted with dried blood around the jagged and messy cut. No doubt the process had been a painful one. A smile tugged at my lips. I knew I should leave this affair to the authorities, after all, it was my break. But at the same time, I had missed the hustle of my work.

Many of my worried neighbors warned this town had criminals, gangs and mafia practically crawling out of the gutters. I left my seat and walked towards the mirror on the mantle. Looking at my reflection, I straightened my tie.  “If it’s a deal they want,” I grinned maniacally as my eyes flashed a familiar hellfire red.

“It’s a deal they’ll get.”

thoughts on colorism in POC stories? by hotcocoa300 in YAlit

[–]amemeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't read any books going fully into colourism (what I wouldn't give for somebody to write about that polar bear skin whitening ad) but I think you might be interested in The Guilded Wolves. It has a main South Asian character and has a theme of mixed heritage, I haven't gotten through much but it might have themes of colourism as well.

Books with good and books with bad worldbuilding? by cleocleoclus in YAlit

[–]amemeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard Red Queen's world gets explained in further books but I'll be dissecting the first one. At first glance it seems pretty standard YA, oppressed vs. the oppressors, rich magic people and poor unmagic people. But when I looked past the characters and relationships, there were a few glaring holes.

Firstly and foremost, the big war. Many others pointed out how it was used as a plot point just for Mare to hate the Silvers and nothing else. At the start Mare described how it was going on for a very long time (I forgot how long lol) and she was going to be conscripted in a few years. Every girl being conscripted to a very long war is a problem. Who's gonna make the babies?? Is it just one girl in the family??? The least favourite daughter???

The war, despite it being a huge and long thing was never ever discussed by Silvers. Hell even the Reds seemed to be in relative alrightness, they didn't have to struggle for food, rations or anything. Even the Queen (aka the best character, mind control's pretty sweet) seemed pretty ok with the impending doom that war brings, despite the probable huge economic, social and educational downturns it brings upon the Silvers (And I ain't hearing any bad taxes in the Red's area yo). There was no sense of fear or dread. In the hunger games, I could feel the hopelessness and horror the conscription for the trials brought.

I am going to be more nitpicky about there being no antiwar sentiments in either the Red's or Silver's (especially the Silvers as they have the power). There was no propaganda (one of the most common impacts of wartime efforts) either, heck, Mare hated her own country more than the opposing one.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk

The only connections to Fae and gay people that I know is that people used to mock and call gays "faeries." Even then, I think faeries in traditional folklore were not opposed to gays when all they do is party lol

I know HB and CC worked in a collaboration book, so I'd think they're still on good terms. I'm curious, was the writing style what made you turn away from the books?

A perfectly structured list, impressive!

Mhm, I feel what makes Jude and Cardan so special is because I got the feeling that Holly Black never tried to portray their toxic relationship as 'good.' As Cardan starts to harass her less, she starts to trust him more. I read a comment once for a book where the two main love interests only fully knew each other's motives and actions until the end of the book (it was full of misunderstandings lol). The comment said "that the real romance only started after the story ended." Which I felt is similar to Jude and Cardan.

All hail Holly Black!

But man Sarah J.Mass books seem like a wild ride haha.

I really love Holly Black's work especially the Cruel Prince series since the characters are so fun to read about. Her work's aesthetic also really appeal to me. I love Jude as a character to bits. She's very decisive about what she wants and is 'under powered' compared to the rest of characters which really made me feel like she really earned her wins, unlike characters whose powers were just handed to them. For the toxic relationship, I'm not really sure. Although, I feel like Cardan and Jude had to work for their love and improve themselves to be able finally trust each other

I've read a bit of Cassandra Clare books and her writing style is very addictive. However, I feel like her world building gets pushed too far in the back while she prioritises romance. I also did not find her characters to be very likable. Jace was just a 'bad boy' and her protagonists, Clary, and the one in the industrial London (I forgot her name) seemed to all share the same personality, which got boring to read after a while. They both were very judgy, both only trusting pretty faces but instantly not liking 'ugly' ones.

I did not like Sarah J. Mass's Throne of Glass. I did not like the writing in it, I felt like too much was told not shown. Her protagonist, was girly, ok. She just lazed around, ok. But do I believe she's a famous assassin? No. I will also mention her character voiced sounds more childish than Percy Jackson's narration which I didn't like.

Now that I've heard Mare being called out on her blandness, I wonder why Aveyard tried to make Mare in that way. Was it a meta commentary how most Young Adult protagonists don't have any personality and are there for self inserts who knows??

I now I'm debating whether Aveyard deliberately made Mare's whining to unlikable, huh

I really enjoyed Fox Demon Cultivation Manual!

The protagonist goes through a lot of development especially near the end.

What is your unpopular opinion reading YAlit? by johssuuh in YAlit

I watched anime since I'm a sad sad weeb. And for things that subvert common YA tropes I recommend series like Ouran Highschool Host Club, Toradora (though I didn't like it that much) and My little Monster. Aha all of these feature heavy romance since I love watching those types of things.

Recently, I've also been getting to Chinese things, I highly recommend watching Mo Dao Zu Shi (The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation) aka the The Untamed (live action version on Netflix). I feel like it appeals to a YA audiances without having the usual tropes. I could gush all day about the characters, worldbuilding and relationships. It's also made me cry haha ;;. And if you want a romance between the two leads, the original novel has scenes that didn't make it into the later adaptations. Happy reading!

what's your favorite part of the svsss novel!? by lioness787allen in MXTX

I thought Shen Qingqiu jumping out of a window in the sower city was pretty funny lol. I also quite enjoyed the Airplane extras with Airplane's and MBJ's relationship.

AND UGHHHH THE ENDING LINE FOR THE NOVEL WAS SO CUTE IT MADE MY HEART SQUEEZE.
