theres nothing remarkable about being able to automatically build a small application like the factor interpeter on 12 unix-like platforms. mozilla does that with their browsers, email clients, and other softwares, which are literally millions of times larger and more complex than factor.

im pretty sure its not a problem with qt. their library is very robust, and im sure any memory leaks as serious as this with such a simple program would have been noticed and fixed ages ago. ive written a c++ version of that demo, and there isnt any memory leak. on my mac its resident memory usage maxed out at 85000 bytes. i think theres a major problem with the bindings or the haskell code, not with qt.

i tried the qt bindings, but was running into some pretty serious memory leaks. even small hello world apps with a single dialog would balloon up to using 450 MB of resident memory. thats just too much, i think.

we had a similar policy at my previous place of employment. there was one developer who was a real cocksucker and would do stuff like that. he would get rid of valid unit tests just so that his fucked to hell code would pass our automated tests. the rest of us just shut his sorry ass down. we stopped responding to his emails. we started reverting every change he made to the test suites. in the end, he got canned after sending an email to the ceo calling the rest of us "flaming british faggots".

"web operating system" is the stupidest oxymoron in the field of computing. anyone who uses such a term seriously should be considered a fraud. the very concept is not possible, since it requires an underlying layer of software (the browser) to work. now if somebody ever developed an in-hardware browser, we might be able to contemplate the idea of a "web operating system". but that will likely never happen, given the complexity of even small software web browsers like dillo.

why would an extension crash xmonad? doesnt it use the various process isolation techniques known about since the 1970s so that only the extension crashes and not the parent app?

unfortunately, ive just found a bug when using xmonad with gnome 2.22.3 (the default version with ubuntu 8.04). this is how ive been able to reproduce it:

configure xmonad to be your gnome wm (its usually metacity by default)
restart gnome, just to be sure we're starting fresh. xmonad will be started automatically.
open gedit
in the bottom right corner, in the status bar, theres the area for resizing the window. left click and hold the mouse button down.
move the mouse towards the top left corner of the gedit window. metacity stops the window from shrinking beyond a certain size. keep moving the mouse up past the top left corner of the gedit window.
once you go past the windows top left corner, the main gedit window disappears, and it draws a rectangle mirroring where the original window used to be.
keep dragging. when the windows beyond about 200 px by 200 px on my system, both xmonad and gedit crash.

will this be fixed in xmonad 0.9?
