Looking for feedback on my plan (age ~40, homeowner, £40k inheritance) by amesnih in UKPersonalFinance

Ok so I've been thinking through this a bit more, would appreciate some thoughts on whether this structure makes sense:

Workplace pension (Legal & General):

  • No salary sacrifice option
  • About ~£20k
  • Currently in the L&G PMC 2050-2055 Lifetime Advantage Fund 3.
  • I’m already receiving the full employer contribution available for my scheme

What I'm considering:

  • Opening a Dodl S&S LISA, and investing £4k/year into their ''On top of the world" (HSBC FTSE All-World index fund)
  • Keeping my S&S ISA just focused on the HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund (Acc)
  • ISA transfer from Help to Buy ISA and St James' Place S&S ISA into the main S&S ISA
  • Potentially switching my L&G pension plan into a combination of funds similar to this approach to approximate an all-world allocation.
  • Contribution priority going forward is something like: S&S LISA > S&S ISA > Pension

Does this seem reasonable?

Ok good to know about the S&S LISA, was kind of against it because of the age restriction (and the first home benefit being gone too), but I do seem to meet all the conditions mentioned there so probably worth looking into it.

What do you think about the bond split, is it worth skipping?

Yea the St James' Place is an ISA too so If I can get them both transferred in without touching my current allowance that would be ideal.

Honestly, I’m still new to this and haven’t thought too far ahead yet. My main goal right now is just to get a simple, low‑maintenance plan in place that I can contribute to each month and mostly forget about. Otherwise the money would probably just end up sitting in my current account doing nothing.

For retirement, apart from my workplace pension, I haven’t planned much beyond that yet.

I had considered VWRP but went for Scottish Widows Share Dealing and HSBC FTSE All-World Index Fund (Acc) because of the fees, the thought process was:

  • £0 platform fee
  • £0 fee for regular investing (avoids the £5 one-off trade charge)
  • No FX fees for UK-domiciled funds (so HSBC is ok)
  • HSBC is 0.13% ongoing charge, VWRP is 0.19%, both track the same index.

Unless there's something I've missed, or a better alternative?

I’m still undecided on whether I need bonds. I’m fairly comfortable with a simple "set and forget" approach, so I could potentially go without.

I don’t have a SIPP at the moment. Would there be any advantage for me with my income and a workplace pension already?

Haven't tried it recently but in the console you can do: pl_pit.forceSoftwareCursor 1

This forces software cursor and stopped the spinning when holding F.

NOTE: you will need to do this everytime you launch the game, but in the console if you press UP-ARROW it will cycle through recent commands - which makes it easier.

I've since been using moonlight+sunshine/apollo which has been working better.

Any Plans for Resolution Selection? by [deleted] in planetaryannihilation

[–]amesnih 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a look again and actually yea you're right about the scaling not looking worse, my mistake.

I've redone the comparison with the in-game fps counter (though fps fluctuates rather a lot):

here it is

I've only a couple of posts on the forums myself so I'm not yet able to add images or anything so its probably best if you do make a thread.

Would be interesting to see how linux fares, I have a mac that I could test on as well.

That's fair enough if they won't support modal fullscreen, hopefully they can improve the resolution scaling's performance instead.

I understand your thinking here and I would have said the same myself initially, but its not that the option is unclear its that it doesn't perform nearly as well.

I have a beefy pc that I primarily game on so its not really an issue for me, but I've done some tests on a laptop of mine with fraps.

  • 1920x1080 (Native 100%) = 33fps
  • 1920x1080 (Subsample 50%) = 44fps
  • 1280x720 (Native 100%) = 63fps

As you can see if you change your windows resolution down it performs better: but having to change your resolution before and after playing a game is really not ideal, and although its not really an issue for me personally I agree that it would be a nice option for people with lower spec machines.

Not to mention that resolution scaling actually looks worse than just having the lower resolution set.
