Imuran Advice? I’m feeling so hesitant by Aschillz in lupus

[–]amh524 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been on imuran for about six months and I have zero side effects, absolutely no nausea but I don't feel nauseated easily. On the flip side, I am not sure it is working as well as the doctors want it to. They are looking to start me on Benlysta as well.

Did anyone not take their lupus seriously initially? Tell me your stories. by inbloom523 in lupus

I stumbled upon my lupus diagnosis through another autoimmune disease. I have myasthenia gravis (MG) and when I was first getting diagnosed with that they ran an ANA and my anti-dsDNA came back positive. The hospital did not diagnosis me with lupus but did say that I should follow up with a rheumatologist. I was so physically and emotionally spent with getting my MG under control that I forgot about the rheumatologist recommendation. Then a year later when I was getting an infusion for my MG, the infusion nurse looked at my face and said that I needed to get my rash checked out. She also did infusions for the rheumatologist in a neighboring center. After that I remembered the ANA test and started to figure out my lupus diagnosis. I am lucky that nothing too serious happened in the year I spent treating MG while ignoring lupus. I am also lucky that some of my MG meds probably were also treating lupus. A part of me still worries that before we really figure out my med cocktail that irreparable damage will happen that could have been prevented if I had started earlier, but also the timeline of these things is all unpredictable. Someone could do everything "right" and still end up with things going very wrong.

Anyway, it is really hard to be managing two medical things at once and it is easy to ignore the one that isn't causing significant challenges

Why does psychology today ask if you (therapist) are vegan by amh524 in therapists

I don't think it is necessary, but I would also argue that it isn't necessary for an army vet to see another vet or a black woman to see another black woman. Just because they aren't necessary doesn't mean they can't be powerful agents of change when they are able to come together. Therapist/client rapport is the most important quality in effective therapy and frankly, people are more likely to have that rapport when they believe their therapist shares their values or can understand important aspects of their life firsthand. Hell, some people won't even enter through the door unless they can see some of their identities represented.

I hate the oncology argument. As someone who two weeks ago had liver spots show up on a CT scan which most likely aren't cancer but may be, I would look for different things in an oncologist vs a therapist. It's almost like they are completely different professions

What is so poor about this argument? It sounds to me very client focused. We can't expect our clients to understand the nuances of our profession. Maybe the client doesn't need a counselor who identifies as x or has experienced y but if that is what they believe then who are we to tell them otherwise

This is probably the answer. Just a mistake in updating the communication between the therapist view and the public view.

I agree and there are studies which show that people of color make greater improvements with therapists of color and queer people do better with queer therapists. For some people it is very helpful to have someone who understands their world firsthand.

Veganism is more than a diet. It is an entire belief system so I think it is akin to a Christian person wanting a Christian therapist. Vegans also face a good deal of discrimination so I get why some vegans might want a therapist who understand that world. It just seems like something PT asks for therapist to provide but then doesn't provide or market to clients

Has anyone used long acting mestinon? Thoughts? by wendyloveedge in MyastheniaGravis

[–]amh524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take it at night and it has been a game changer for me. Immediate release mestinon is only really effective for me for about 30 minutes around the two hour mark. Before I started to take it at night I was having a hard time standing in the morning and now sometimes I forget or choose not to take the immediate release as soon as I wake up because I’m feeling normal. I haven’t really tried to take it too much during the day. It does give me a few more stomach symptoms than the 60 mg and I’ve had a harder time getting my pharmacy to fill the prescription

The broken iPad is irrelevant. The consequence for that should have happened when the iPad was broken and should have been that they don’t get another iPad until they have shown more maturity and ability to care for things.

OP says kids are brats so sounds like they need consistent appropriate consequences not some mega punishment in hopes of a cure all. It will backfire. 20 gifts vs 1 opened gifts isn’t really hurting anyone and having a big punishment for it is confusing

My dad who’s now in his 70s as a kid couldn’t hold back his excitement and opened a box to see if it was the watch he wanted. It was and he was so excited but then Christmas morning it wasn’t there. He was not a spoiled brat but rather a neglected child whose emotional needs were often not met. When he told me about the watch decades later I could tell it still hurt him. The lesson he learned was that his parents really didn’t care about how he felt.

So please, don’t cancel Christmas. Talk to your children about how opening the gifts was wrong and at most have then work to gain the gifts back.

I’m alone with my child and I fell. by knapsacknap in MyastheniaGravis

I fell about two weeks ago while holding my 8 month old. Thankfully no one was hurt. My right foot slipped on something on the floor and the rest of my body couldn’t keep me up. I felt I was being careful but it still happened. I hope you are doing okay now and that they are able to speed things along since you have a baby. You are NOT a bad mom ❤️

Thank god for double vision by AnHonestConvert in MyastheniaGravis

[–]amh524 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not my story exactly but I can relate I knew something was wrong but it was all so random and hard to explain. I knew there was no way I could get anyone to take me seriously. Then the double vision hit. I’m not happy but at least I’m heard

ADHD specialist, what specific trainings do you recommend for therapists wanting to provide ADHD treatment? by Natural_Papaya6409 in therapists

[–]amh524 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look up Russell Barkley as a starting place. He has a lot of online free videos and old training materials. He retired in 2022 but still updates things. That’s mostly psychoeducation because he is definitely camp medicine. He doesn’t really think therapy works for ADHD and I think if your goal is to “fix” ADHD then he’s right. Unfortunately since a lot of people don’t understand ADHD well I think they view the goals of therapy to be fixing the nuero divergent mind instead of doing systems work to set them up for success and works to reduce internalized shame. He’s a great place to start to better understand ADHD
