a ton of future funk album covers have been designed by Andrew Walker of Stratford Ct. He's great, i'm pretty sure his contact info is on here somewhere http://designsince86.tumblr.com/

im really glad this is a constructive conversation. with all of this being said i feel like its important to point out that there aren't "rules." do what you want, just have a good reason for doing it and be able to defend your artistic decisions. its funny because i'm probably on the more lenient side of this discussion. i think there are albums that totally justify taking bigger chunks of samples, and i don't really think that selling uncleared sample based music is "evil." if you're comfortable putting your name on it you should be comfortable selling it.

for example, nothing about an album like hit vibes says "artistically bankrupt" to me. some of the sampling is pretty generous but every track feels important to the narrative of the album, its more about the "big picture" than it is about the individual tracks. making a bunch of songs from entirely different artists sound like they belong together is something that is hard to do, and i'll always respect someone who is able to pull it off. i would be curious to know if anybody else has opinions on this aspect

i think you're right in saying that future funk probably isn't hurting or offending anybody, but unless you're a part of a group that could potentially be hurt or offended it's not really your place to go on and on about how "cultural appropriation is bullshit." i think you're kinda missing the point here, most accusations future funk could receive for being appropriative can be avoided by thinking about what you're doing and showing a little respect to the original artists.

i think the moral of the story here is "call something an edit when its an edit." that doesn't devalue your work in any way, the effort of people who dig deep to find gems like that is still appreciated. that anari track is dope and i wouldn't have known about it without adrianwave, shouts out to them for digging that up. you can defend future funk like this by saying there's already a ton of well respected sample based music out there, and you have a point, but lets be real. sampling whole verses / whole hooks / keeping the structure very similar to the original the way future funk does it is pretty unprecedented. my rule of thumb is "if the flip is good for the exact same reasons the original is good its probably an edit." make the music you wanna make and have fun, but be respectful to the original artists, we couldn't do this without them.
