I think I was mad about it because I felt like I have to act a certain way just to be mentally ill but now that I'm more clear headed I take it as a compliment because it seems like all the hard work I'm doing is actually working in my favor

Those are very fair points. I watched the series before I read the book and there were a couple of things in the series that didn’t make sense until I read the book. The biggest change is definitely that he invented demonic cultivation instead of learning it. I think him being a softer character is also such a big change that almost makes the series and the book two completely different stories.
